Why do Dominionists and Reconstructionists hate ecumenicalism?
Scripture says:

'If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.' Romans 12:18
'Strive to live in peace with everybody.' Hebrews 12:14

In a nod to our Catholic brothers and sisters, Augustine said:

"In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love."

So WHY does unity and "getting along" seem to be such a threat and anathema to those caught up in the fringes of the religious right...especially when it (ecumenicalism) is so complimentary to the spirit of Christ?

I want to know: What is the SCRIPTURAL basis and argument for being so hostile and suspicious toward ecumenicalism?

1. They hate it because they have convinced their followers that they
have the ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Recognizing other denominations as equals would make their followers suspect that they don't have all the answers.

That's why, for example, the extremely conservative Wisconsin Synod Lutherans (WELS) are so adamant that their followers not attend the services of other denominations, not even other Lutherans. The people's heads might explode if they ever found out that other Protestants read the same Bible, sing the same hymns, and preach many of the same values.

I was once reading a series of profiles of American religious groups, written in the form of a representative of that reilgious group answering a set of questions. Each representative was asked, "Does your religion believe that it is the only true religion?"

Most of the mainstream churches said "no."

However, the representative of one of the fundie groups said, "Of course. If we didn't believe that we are the only true religion, we'd teach something else."
