I lost my head and posted in R/T
And was reminded that Jesus is just a fictional character who never really existed and is just the same as the Krishna story, etc.

What was I thinking?

1. I wouldn't worry about it - the jackass also thinks the Bible is an astrological drama

2. Pardon the intrusion
I just wanted to clue you guys in to where this new meme is coming from. There is a recent video making its circulation in the atheist community. It is part of a larger movie called Zeitgeist: The movie. The first part takes some wide aimed potshots at the origins of Christianity. It contains some interesting information but it is surrounded by a lot of fast and loose games with linguistics and plays to conspiracy theory rather heavily.

This conspiracy aspect becomes clear as the movie moves on to the second and third parts where it attempts to produce the full court press for MIHOP concerning 9/11. The third part moves into global banking conspiracies.

A lot of atheists are getting a hold of the first part and are quite taken with it. Expect to see this notion popping up quite a bit in the near future.

5. Atheists? Really?
The only person I've heard talking up that movie was CrazyforKucinich, and he was some kind of astrological Christian.

8. Good to know
I'm often amazed at what non-believers know (!) about the origins of our faith. Like the conversation I once had with a self-proclaimed Atheist who took issue with what the Dead Sea Scrolls say about Jesus. I found this peculiar, because the Scrolls say nothing about Jesus. But he assured me he knew better than I did. I just nodded politely.

9. It's even more surprising
what believersdon't know about the origins of their faith, or their sacred texts. By and large, they are unaware of the multitude of Christian sects that existed in the first few centuries CE, how the books of the Bible were written down and cobbled together from various sources and how they were copied, translated, added to and subtracted from over centuries. The lack of knowledge goes deep enough that probably 35-40% of Christians in this country still believe that the Bible is the literal and inerrant word of god, despite all rational opinion and evidence to the contrary.

4. Unlike the poster in question,

you were thinking.

This is a particularly irony-challenged little moran who fulminates about others' "brainwashing" and belief in "fairy tales" while fervently--and unquestioningly--believing everything that's run past him by the headbanger pseudo-scholars. He's not the only one to show up in R/T, but so far he's the most laughable.
