More dead missonaries...
Lest we forget Iraq is not the only trouble spot, I just got this from a Baptist peace list I'm on:

"Subject: United Church of Christ missionaries killed in Columbia

Two Columbian Pastors Killed

Global Ministries missionary, Michael Joseph shares the following: “This past Saturday (July 7) I heard the terrible news that protestant pastors Jael Cruz García (age 27), and José Humberto Mendez (age 65) had been murdered by the FARC guerrilla in the community of La Legiosa, Huila, in southern Colombia. Pastor Jorge Arturo Giraldo of the Colombian Council of Protestant Churches (CEDECOL), called on all Christians to "pray and support in any way that you can Yuvy Andrea Oyola (pastor Cruz García's widow) and their daughter of just a few months of age…" Please keep reading at www.colombiacalling.blogspot.com

Pray for Peace,

Burton"

1. Wow. Thanks for this.
I'm surprised I didn't get an e-mail. I'm on the Global Ministries e-mail list. I'll take a look at the site. Thanks for this sad news.

2. I'm not exactly sure the victims were...
with Global Ministries, it may have been just a Global Ministries missionary who reported the murders.

And I got it relayed through a Baptist list-- so maybe some of us are starting to communicate about real things after all and getting past these theological spats.

Anyway, since I brought it up, the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America is certainly not the biggest Baptist organization out there, but it is one that speaks my mind in most things-- http://www.bpfna.org/

3. Oh, yeah, BPF is a great organization
I belong to the Disciples Peace Fellowship, since, for some reason, the UCC doesn't have a peace fellowship.

Are you Baptist? The seminary I went to is affiliated with both the UCC and the ABC. The UCC and the ABC have much in common, and should be doing more together, IMHO.

4. Me, Baptist? I'm a Quaker now attending a UU church...
and found out about the BPFNA from another Quaker.

Long before all that, though, I was deeply impressed with the Madison Ave. Baptist church in NYC that was everything Baptists more commonly in the news are not.

Historically, Baptists and Quakers should have closer ties with Baptists way back when having little more use for doctrine than Quakers and with their pacifist roots.

Alas, as with far too many churches a few small theological points and a few huge egos nipped that in the bud.
