Yo UUs
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 07:30 PM by Tux
I attend a UU church but, lately, I've been hating it. I love UUism however. My church is mostly middle class baby boomers with very few working class people. Each time we have a discussion is Adult Forum or after service, I get interrupted. If I try to speak to a guest speaker during coffee hour, someone has to interrupt and take over the conservation. Others will barely speak to me.

It is known in the church that I am unemployed and have trouble finding even temp jobs. While the baby boomers had it easy before free trade raised it's head again, I think they don't want me there. Afterall, my opinions aren't worth being heard but the boomer's views are more than welcome. Has anyone else ran into this? It's so frustrating that I may go with the Church of the Larger Fellowship since I can stay with UUism and not deal with baby boomer elitism in my church.

1. Uh-oh.
I just saw this.

That's what is both an advantage and disadvantage of UU churches - each has its own unique character.

Is there another congregation in the area that you can try?

There is also an on-line UU church.

I'm sorry things are turning out this way.

Going to Service is no fun if you don't have anything in common with the congregants.

We'll have to thing of a solution.

2. I found a solution
I joined for a trial membership for the Church of the Larger Fellowship.

3. That's a shame
Some people have no manners. Sounds like that congregation is full of them.

Here's my experience with UUism.

I've belonged to 4 congregations, 2 in NJ and 2 in Maryland.
One in NJ was basically for gays and fans of classical music, but not families with kids. The other one was very good and friendly to all kinds of people.
One in Maryland was very snobby and elitist - extremely unwelcoming. They have a reputation for chewing up ministers one after another.

The other is my current one. It is absolutely wonderful. So warm, so welcoming, so accepting of everyone. It grows every week, and yet we still feel like a big family. I feel safe there - safe to try new things.

Every congregation has its own "personality." If my only experience with UUs had been the first congregation in Maryland, I would have left long ago.
