People still believe in Satanic Ritual Abuse it seems
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1320148

Complete with links to completely bat-crazy religious right hate sites decrying the evils of the Occult, Masons, Catholics, etc.

GRRRRRRRR.... this does not belong on DU.

2. I can't believe the ignorance of some people.
Isn't it amazing how many people read the Bible and they think they know what it means?

3. it just really annoys me
People of our faith are the ones who are still paying for the hysteria of the 80's. I know a couple people who had social services show because someone called and was afraid those "devil worshippers" were hurting their own children. Stuff like this makes people in some places still have to hide their beliefs.

5. I also think this guy who originally posted that so-called poll has an agenda.
This is acting like a RW operative 'sleeper cell' to disrupt and divide the DU. I'm really surprised how long the Mods let obvious religious persecution go on. This bothers me.

4. People read the Bible
And infuse into it the meaning they want, as well as ignore anything that would inconvenience or otherwise make them uncomfortable. That's why so many RRRW people have no qualms about committing adultery and getting multiple divorces despite the 7th commandment and the multiple admonishments against divorce. They'll rail against homosexuality as if it's the worst possible sin in the world, however, and spew that nonsense about "witches", like they're the end all and be all of morality. :eyes:

told by a self-appointed authority that matters. Some of these people can't even think for themselves and put up silly arguments in defending their hatred towards other people and religions, as our original so-called pollster in the link to the OP. This person just kept citing his very vague question for a poll as justification that the DU considers other religions to be of Satanic nature and asking those who disagree with this twisted opinion to leave. Threads of this nature bother me and make people feel that real discussion is unwelcomed.

7. Indeed
If it's not spoon-fed to them by their pastors or their Bible-study leaders they don't know it. That's why liberal Christians, atheists, agnostics, and people of other faiths know significantly more about the Bible than they do. Those people actually read it and learn about it, rather than memorizing some cherry-picked verses from it and accepting other peoples' interpretations of them.

9. Indeed !
Edited on Sun Jul-15-07 07:13 PM by Marrah_G
The Christians I know would never act like that. Even my very Catholic family would never believe such crap. Then again those people think Catholics are devil worshipers also. And even then you have the catholic Pope saying the Catholic church is the only true church. it's all so incredibly fucked up. Makes me very glad to be a Wiccan, because frankly we don't give a crap if others believe as we do.

Disclaimer: if my post is rambling at all it's because today is my birthday and I just got back from a most awesome Irish restraunt and had a few to many guinesses.

11. I'm also glad to be an atheist
Because, despite what some say about "radical/evangelcal atheists" I don't give a flying rip what others believe so long as they don't try to press their beliefs on me or anyone else, or harm anyone via their beliefs.

And feel free to ramble on. It doesn't bother me at all. :hi:

18. I had a friend who had previously done "fundie" Bible Study...
...but he always encouraged his students to read stuff for themselves. He told me that they desperately needed this instruction.

When a new person came to the group, he'd asked, "In Exodus, God tells Moses that the Israelites can obtain water by simply asking the rocks to produce it. What does Moses do?"

The answer was invariably, "He strikes the rock instead and God is displeased and withholds the water!"

This is when Tom would say, "No, that's the movie with Charlton Heston. In the Bible, Moses tell Aaron to get the water and Aaron doesn't follow the instructions."

It's like people who think that the "fruit of the knowledge of good and evil" is described as being an apple. It wasn't. And so on...

Sexual Health by Ignatious de la Pena y de Ybarra, Senior Inquisitor

Dear Ignatious: I think my boyfriend may have sold his soul to the devil, but am not sure. How do Inquisitors find out the truth, and will I have to be questioned?

—Curious

Dear Curious:

The Inquisition has to move very quickly when determining who is a witch or not, thus such cases must be conducted in the simplest and most summary manner, without the arguments and contentions of advocates, who would slow the process down unduly with legal quibbles and contentions which are introduced in other cases.

Now I have personally heard some doubt expressed as to the meaning of these words, and as to exactly in what manner such cases should be conducted. But, desiring as far as possible to remove all doubt on the matter, let me explain the following procedure once and for all as the most valid: The Judge to whom is committed such a case doesn't require any writ or legal fiddly diddlies; he may conduct the case on holidays for the sake of the convenience of the public, he should shorten the conduct of the case as much as he can by disallowing all dilatory exceptions, appeals and obstructions, the impertinent contentions of pleaders and advocates, and the quarrels of witnesses, and by restraining the superfluous number of witnesses. In many cases, one witness is enough.

You will, of course, be asked to testify and present your case. Because heresy and witchcraft are such heinous crimes we will make every effort to ensure that your testimony is not corrupted by any sins that the flesh is heir to, or by the influence of any supernatural malefactors.

14. A belated Happy Birthday to you!
As to the belief in satanic abuse ... what idiots! I handled several thousand cases as a social worker (retired about seven years ago). The only mention of Satan I heard was from conservative Christians (the only ones who believed in 'Satan'). Some children of conservative Christians tried to rebel - and make their parents completely crazy - by CLAIMING to be 'Satanists.' It was all a bunch of hooey.

And the only ones I found that engaged in ritualistic abuse, including abuse of animals, were ... consciousless psychopaths ... who had been victimized by family violence/abuse more often than not (or violence/abuse by a 'family friend'). Something extremely tramatic must have happened to DimSon (Dubya) as a kid; I see that empty look in his eyes (e.g. the death of his baby sister, and his parents' reaction to it).

16. Yeah!
Justice for All!

My Pagan friends gave me the nickname - I studied about Maat. I went through law school, although I'm not a practicing attorney (I'm into helping my hubby with his computer companies). I'm a Unitarian-Universalist, who is into believing "God" is an "it" and an "energy" that is both within and without. Believe or not, that's not that far from my Pagan friends' beliefs. I believe that one can manifest the One as one or many, as female or male (or both), or whatever. I enjoy studying the metaphysical and transcendentalism.

Take care!
