Question about Tibetan Buddhism
(Is there a Buddhism thread here I can't locate??)

The Dalai Lama is in Seattle for a few days (wonderful pics at www.seattletimes.com)

In several photos, people are wearing long white scarves.

Can somebody explain the significance to me? What are they called? Thanks!!

1. It is called a Kata and is used in place of a handshake or greeting
No Tibetan custom is as well known as the offering of a kata or white scarf in greeting. The kata is an auspicious symbol. It lends a positive note to the start of any enterprise or relationship and indicates the good intentions of the person offering it. Katas are offered to religious images, such as statues of the Buddha, and to lamas and government. Officials prior to requesting their help in the form of prayers or other services. The offering of the kata indicates that the request is not marred by corrupt thoughts or ulterior motives.

2. I've also heard it described as a symbol of a huge number of flowers.
With each thread in the cloth representing a bouquet of flowers. You give it to the teacher, and he or she gives it back.
