In Three Words...
Edited on Tue May-12-09 03:00 AM by mtf80123
What is the "Meaning of Life?

RULE #1: You can only state in the "Subject Line" of your response what your answer is and it must not be longer than 'three words'.

RULE #2: Say whatever you wish in the Message body.

3. Replication of DNA
Edited on Mon May-18-09 12:33 AM by steven johnson
"I wish you all the joy that you can wish."
-- William Shakespeare (Merchant of Venice).

"Make me immortal in that realm
where all wishes and longings go,
where spreads the Radiant One's region,
where holy bliss is, and happiness.
For Indra, flow thou on, Indu!"

Rig Veda

At the end of the 20th century, based upon insight gleaned from the gene-centered view of evolution, biologists George C. Williams, Richard Dawkins, David Haig, among others, conclude that if there is a primary function to life, it is the replication of DNA and the survival of one's genes.

However, no matter how the universe came into existence, humanity's fate in this universe appears to be doomed as —even if humanity would survive that long— biological life will eventually become unsustainable, be it through a Big Freeze, Big Rip or Big Crunch.

Nothing lasts forever, even the universe.

12. Impermanence - its powerful when you think about it.
The fact that every moment arises and ends is mirrored in our very existence. When were open to this it opens up a whole new way of thinking about life and even how we live. Everything will end one day - thats the only guarantee of life - and its not a negative but rather a positive. When we embrace our actions and their consequences its only then that we can take responsibility and truly start living and loving.

7. Love, learn, reunite
I have two of the same words as someone upthread. (Sorry but I don't write down the name) His third choice was liberation, which I don't understand.

As for my choice of reunite, I mean coming back to One. We are One. Every once in a while, the idea of our Onesness pops into my head and the moment becomes so different.

8. liberation
Im not the poster but Im guessing by his word choices he's coming from the same background as I (Buddhism). Liberation is the 3rd Noble Truth. If Im wrong I apologies in advance:)

The Four Noble Truths:

1: Duka: Suffering exists

2. Samudaya: There is a cause for suffering.

3. Nirodha: There is an end to suffering. (Liberation/Nibbana)

4. Magga: In order to end suffering, you must follow the Eightfold Path.

9. Exactly so.
By learning though inner work and meditation what drives our attachments, we can reduce the hold they have on us. By reducing the grip of attachment we free ourselves to become who we truly are (liberation). By reclaiming our authentic selves we open to the possibility of (re)experiencing Oneness.

Buddhism expresses it better than any other philosophy or science of mind I've found so far. Though I follow a path that is an eclectic combination of eastern and western influences, Zen is at its core.

OK, so it's not exactly the Meaning of Life, but the question can point the way. Which is all we can really ask of words.
