Post your favorite holiday songs.
So we're having a Christmas party and I'm putting together a play list. Anyone care to make suggestions? Which holiday songs really put you in the holiday mood? Old classics by original artists, good rock/pop songs and/or anything really original or different are what I'm looking for here. I'll start with a few of my favorites, already on the list:

Blue Christmas --Elvis
Merry Christmas, The War is Over --Lennon
Nuttin for Christmas --Smashmouth
Mele Kalikimaka --Bing Crosby
Santa Claus is Coming to Town --Springsteen
Santa Claus, Do You Ever Come to the Ghetto? --Carlene Davis and Trinity

Thanks! :hi:

1. Baby its cold outside.
The classic early 60's track by Ray Charles and Betty Carter - was the top R & B track at that time. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G5Rbkcxiibw

I downloaded it on iTunes last night. The original album was released on CD and then deleted - now a collectors item.

2. The Band-Christmas Must Be Tonight, The Impressions-Amen...
the entire Phil Spector Christmas Album ( where Bruce got his version of Santa..), Darlene Love's and/or U2's versions of Christmas, Please Come Home, the Beachboys-Little Saint Nick, Chuck Berry -Merry Christmas Baby.......on the ,um, lighter side, the Kinks- Father Christmas, and Bruce's Pilgrim in the Temple of Love ( Santa Gets a Blowjob) ( and no I'm not making that up; there's a you tube of it, I'm too low tech to know how to post the link though); ya probably need to be pretty confident of the sensibilities of the partygoers for that one obviously......

4. Lots to consider there.
Most of which I never thought of, so very cool, thanks. I think I'll skip the Pilgrim-Temple thing, though---there will be a mixed crowd at the party. But I'll have to check it out if I can find it. :D

8. The Beach Boys Christmas Album
The CD that was issued a couple of years ago which includes the album from the early 60's with "Little Saint Nick" and the other Christmas tracks they recorded in the 70's including the song "Child Of Winter". Also the song "Jesus Christ" by Big Star off of "Third/Sister Lovers".

10. The Ramones
Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight), not their best song but since it's the Ramones and it's Christmas it goes on the list.

16. Mahalia Jackson singing Hark The Herald Angels Sing
will bring on the goosebumps. So will The Staples' Sweet Little Jesus Boy (the rest of that album is wonderful, too).

Light of the Stable album by Emmylou Harris is a classic.

There are a number of Motown Christmas albums, too, and the songs by The Jackson 5 (when Michael was still a cute little boy) are esp. good.
