Since this was Laz' idea, I should wait and let him make the
1st post.

He's not here? Oh, darn.

Say hello, everybody, and what are your favorite bands
and genres of music?

:hi:

My favorite band is Ministry.

I like industrial metal, but also go in for prog rock
like Marillion and Dream Theater, and electronic/techno
like Kraftwerk and Moby.

1. Of course he isn't here -
He's sleeping in...
"Up all night - ohh, baby he was up all night!"

:hi:

Welcome to the new group, y'all.

I'm Haele, Laz's S.O. - I'm eclectic in nature, I grew up with classical, folksongs and opera, so I when I'm not listening to groups like Steeleye Span, I tend to like my "modern music" (post 60's) to have a classical feel and a melodic intricacy to it. Give it obscure lyrics, and I like it even more. I'm not so much into groups, more into individual songs.

My theme song has always been "The Digital Song" by Supertramp.

So, for Laz (until he gets up and posts a proper greeting) I'll say "welcome to the forum, everyone".

Thank You!!

And hey, us night owls have to stick together. He's great
company when I can't sleep, which is often. (What I'm doing
up at 9:00 in the morning is beyond me.)

Nice to meet you.

3. This is great!
I'v got to admit I've been stuck in the 70's and 80's lately when it comes to music.

I've been listening to The Police, The Pretenders, early Bowie, The Cure and New Order among many others.

I love all different types of music genre but I don't know anything about what's popular on the radio nowadays, I can't tell one lip synching act from the other.

Here's a toast to the new forum and to Lazaras for thinking of it.

4. My favorite genres......
in this order.

Psychobilly
Funk
Punk
Garage sound (you might be surprised by my choice of bands for this category)
R & B
Blues
Rockabilly
Surf
Reggae
Folk (also, a large inclusive category, for me)
Glitter/Glam
Power Pop
Pop
and then, I like, some, hard rock.
I don't know much about heavy metal or rap or hip hop. (But I plan to look for your recommendations for the genres I am not familiar with, so I can check the music out.)

My favorite band is X.

5. Best of rap/metal is Limp Bizkit
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 04:13 PM by kaitykaity
in small, small doses -- mostly the song called
"Break Stuff."

Also in that genre, Kid Rocks's "Devil without a Cause"
is great from beginning to end.

Heavy metal gods of course are Metallica before the
Black Album. "And Justice for All" seems to be the
album.

I don't know hip hop or rap either.

7. No shutting up now! Go on, go on.

On the favorite band thing, it's more of a state of mind
and an attitude than the music.

It's like the guy in Ministry, Al Jourgensen, has a direct
pipeline into my unconscious mind, or he's hearing the same
voices I hear in the dark and he's figured out a way to
record them. Nobody other musician I've heard does it
quite the same way.

(Twilight zone, I know. I know.)

I like a lot of different music, but would have to list metal and country as my least favourites.

I'm heavy into the 70's and 80's, having graduated HS in '83. I think 77-86 was a great time in music.

11. Thank you, lazarus for getting this Music Group going...
I graduated HS in '67 and I think '76 and into the mid-'80's was a great and extremely important time in music.

Punk valued substance over form, and that was a new thing. (?)

10. Hi, everyone!
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 10:26 PM by mvd
As I'm sure people here are aware, I'm one of the biggest music fans around. I don't have much time now, but I'll be visiting this group again many times when I get the chance. My favorite genres are classic rock (with the Beatles being my favorite artist,) power pop, folk, folk/rock, power pop, pop/rock (have caught on to the recent trend started by Avril, though I like Avril, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton more than Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, and Lindsay Lohan until Lindsay reaches the potential I think she has,) rock, Motown, alternative/modern rock, non-jingoistic country music, alt-country, older R&B, big band and other stuff that my grandfather loves like Joe Venuti and Joshua Bell. Listen to the violin acrobatics of Joshua! I like a lot of music in the mainstream and non-mainstream. I'm what you call an open-minded music listener.

An abbreviated list of artists I love:

Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, The Beatles, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Simon And Garfunkel, Peter Paul & Mary, James Taylor, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, CCR, Moody Blues, Cheap Trick, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Dusty Springfield, Patti Smith, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, The Cars, The Bangles, The Go Gos, Blondie, Elton John, U2, R.E.M., Sinead O'Connor, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, The Corrs, Madonna, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, the more piano-oriented Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow, The Rembrandts, Evan And Jaron, Bonnie McKee, Rilo Kiley, New Pornographers, Lisa Loeb, The Jayhawks, Coldplay, Travis, Radiohead, Green Day, Chantal Kreviazuk, Aimee Mann, the Donnas, Indigo Girls, Maria Mena, Alanis Morissette, Butterfly Boucher, Neil Finn, P.J. Harvey, Kay Hanley and Letters To Cleo, Garbage, Counting Crows, Bree Sharp, Sixpence None The Ricker, System Of A Down (for their lyrics and I also like the music,) Liz Phair, Dar Williams, Diana Anaid, Leona Naess, Anna Waronker, The Wallflowers, Abra Moore, Elliott Smith, Nina Gordon, Collective Soul, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan, Jo Davidson, Hole, Laura Dawn, Loreena McKennitt, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Alan Jackson, Steve Earle, Alison Krauss, Dixie Chicks, Wilco, Kasey Chambers, George Strait, TLC, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Aaliyah, Luther Vandross, Beetoven, Mozart, Wagner, Vivaldi, Handel...

Looks like these will be favorites when I get the CDs: Megan Slankard, Joseph Arthur, Anna Nalick

Thanks for creating the topic, and great idea laz! :hi:

Cindy Alexander and Thea Gilmore.

And the B-52s are now on the list! I love them! So are those other artists I thought would be on when I bought the albums, except Anna Nalick's album comes out in March so she'll officially be in the list then.

As I said, though, I didn't go through my whole collection - so there will be more left off.

18. I'd also look at
"Nude on the Moon", a fuller compilation album.

Of course, Amazon has a feature allowing you to buy their first two albums together for only $20.97, and these have most of their best music.

I hate "Love Shack" for the simple fact that it's virtually the ONLY b-52's song that gets any airplay.

Dream Theater and Tool have to be my favorite two bands. Of course, I have to mention Mr. Bungle, The Arcade Fire, Cursive, Sonic Youth, KMFDM, and Q and not U.

At least those are my favorites at the moment.

Oh, my favorite genres are Prog-metal, Hardcore, Indie Rock, Experimental/Noise, and Post-rock.

By hardcore do you mean industrial or is that something
different?

I just ordered Primal Scream. I hope I don't go on a
CD-buying binge like I did with Korn and RATM. (I bought
every one of their albums almost all at once.) I ended up
making myself sick of them and then not being able to
listen to them for a while.

Do you have any Liquid Tension Experiment?

31. Hardcore is not Industrial, no
Hardcore is a blanket term for bands that draw both punk and metal influences. Bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, The Blood Brothers, Zao, etc.

Primal Scream is awesome.

And yes, I have some LTE backed up in MP3 somewhere.

I need more rhythm than that. It's weird. I love
some Sublime, but that's as far as I go. I seem to
I need the regular beat.

I'm actually looking for more, different stuff just
like LTE -- the instrumental. I don't really care
for DT's lead singer, but Portnoy rocks.

26. You and me both, sister
:hi:

I have very, very limited music from post-87.

Have you heard the song "1985" by the group Bowling for Soup? It's priceless. Here's the lyrics:

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happen to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake’s car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright since

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
Cuz she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woohoohoo
(1985)
Woohoohoo

She’s seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink
Even Saint Elmo’s Fire
She rocked out to Wham
Not a big Limp Bizkit fan
Thought she’d get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where’s the mini-skirt made of snake skin
And who’s the other guy that's singing in Van Halen
When did reality become T.V.
What ever happen to sitcoms, game shows
(on the radio was)

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
Cuz she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woohoohoo

She hates time make it stop
When did Motley Crew become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop
Stop!
And bring back

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
Cuz she's still preoccupied
With 1985

Woohoohoo

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV (woohoohoo)
Her two kids in high school

Elysian Fields
Fields of the Nephilim (hence the avatar)

Photek
Portishead
Shonen Knife
Sigur Rós
Skunk Anansie
The Cure
The Flaming Lips
