Any hummer sightings to share with us Northerners?

It would be great to hear someone has them buzzing around right now.

I am happy to see the Bufflehead's, Swan's, Junco's and other winter birds, but I miss the hummingbirds the most.

I read the "Humnet" report each week of Louisiana's winter hummingbirds, and there are quite a lot of them. But me personally I haven't had a good winter. Other people are having lots of Calliopes, Rufous/Allens, Buff-Bellies around. Someone even had a Magnificent Hummingbird in Slidell, Louisiana. Last winter I had a lot of winter hummingbirds so I don't know what the difference is this year. :-(

3. WOW an early start

I live a little over 100 miles north of New York City and I don't expect to see the return of my local flock for a few months yet. I'll let ya when I spot the first of my old friends.

BTW my resident flock of Goldfinches have started to moult from olive-drab to yellow. I think they are very early on their change but I'm enjoying watching it.

6. Anna's hummingbirds in Las Vegas, NV

I have seen several Anna's hummingbirds this winter in Las Vegas.

7. Here in the bay area

of Calif. I have lots of Hummers everyday at my feeder. They are there first thing in the morning 'til almost dark.

We have two kinds that winter over here. One is Annas and I forget the other one.

10. Male Costas Hummingbird

I saw a male Costas Hummingbird on the Arizona Hot-Springs/White Canyon Trail Hike (this trail is located near the Arizona-Nevada border) last week.

My friend and I were hoping to see a Tufted Flycatcher but we were not lucky enough to find this bird.

I considered going for them last weekend, but it would be a 7 hour drive each way, and I was too lazy.

Too darn lazy to chase the Iceland Gull too, which would have only been 3 hours each way.

I did have the dark realization last week that Tucson is only a 12 hour drive, so I could go there on a 4 day weekend to chase. It's shorter than my longest chase, which was from Arcata to Ramer/Finney lakes for an Anhinga in a 2 day weekend.

It was 80 degrees (more or less) in Las Vegas so it was probably warmer near the Colorado River. Since the hike to the river was approximately 3 miles, it would have been a warm hike. The hike plus the 7 hour drive may have proved exhausting.

Have you been to Tucson and Southeastern Arizona in August? I traveled down to Tucson and Southeastern Arizona (Ramsey Canyon) a couple of years ago during August. I saw a variety of interesting hummingbirds including a hybrid Berylline-Magnificent Hummingbird. He was quite the looker.

18. I've been 3 times in June

I was actually considering going in August this year. I still need a bunch of stuff such as Black Hawk, Buff Breasted Flycatcher, Eared Quetzal, Botteri's Sparrow, Five Striped Sparrow, and Black Capped Gnatcatcher, and I was thinking then might be a good time to go.

15. finally this week the ruby-throats are back

A few people had ruby-throats all winter, but not me. I think there were 8 species banded in Louisiana this winter, maybe 9. One was Magnificent Hummingbird. But in my yard...nooooo.

19. We have some year round

Anna's hummingbirds hang around here all year and they are regulars at my feeder. But I've also seen a few rufous and Allen's that I think are migrating through southern CA right now. When summer gets here, they'll usually be gone but the black-chinned will be back to keep the Anna's company.

It's a Ruby-Throat riot! I don't think they've yet discovered the reason God made boys and girls, they are still fighting amongst themselves. But they're here.

31. the damnedest thing

Saw the 1st Rubythroats of the year Saturday, just as I was putting out their feeders.

Sunday morning I stepped out the turtle room door to take in the fine morning when I noticed something on the hose box. It was a Rubythroat, laying there with one wing sticking up. As I approached the wing vibrated, live! The beak looked odd, then I realized the tongue was protruding about 1/2".I gently scooped the little bugger up in my hand, where it lay for about 10 seconds, then it flew a few feet, perching on the brick wall like a chimmney swift for about 20 seconds. Then it flew off, apparently none the worse for wear. Nice.
