Anyone know what kind of bird this is?

It spent 2 days in my yard, eating at the feeders & sleeping at my patio door at night.
Sadly, I found feathers on that rug this morning. Out under the tree I found what was left of him/her. :(

1. Coopers or Sharp-Shinned Hawk
hard to tell without any scale. How big was it compared to a robin?

Sounds like it was injured or sick, and then some other animal got it. Definitely not the standard behavior of a healthy accipter.

What was it eating at your feeders? Suet? Normally, these types of hawks are at your feeders to eat the other birds there. One scenario might be that it was going after a smaller bird at your feeders and slammed into one of your windows.

If for some reason this occurs again, call up a wildlife rehabilitation center to come get it. The bird might have been saved.

2. Thanks
It was much larger than a robin, closer to the size of a chicken.

My feeders have a song bird mix seed. I also have berry & nut suet out. I live near an open field and have been having problems with mice in my storage building. Perhaps the bird was after the mice? They have been spotted feeding on seeds left on the ground.

4. Cooper's Hawks feed mainly on songbirds
but I have seen them take squirrels, so it's possible it was going after mice. still, I don't think the prefer to roost on the ground, so something was wrong.

3. Cooper's Hawks have increased tremendously in number
Still, it is sad that it was killed.

My father told me recently of one nabbing a Cardinal at or near the feeder and then crashing into the porch window. Momentarily stunned, it dropped the Cardinal, which then flew away. It is one of the few times that a window collision saved a bird's life!
