1. Looks like a first year adult

It doesn't quite have that brilliant blue yet. I just love these guys. I wish I lived in a part of Texas that has more them, although I do get the painted bunting.

2. we're supposed to get painted buntings around here

but I have yet to see one.
the blue ones do hang around all summer.

but they hide now - they used to hang out on a telephone wire, but I think too many kids probably made them nervous...
