Why do both the ABA and PRBO have a tropicbird as their logo?

Tropicbirds rarely occur in the US outside Hawaii. I know both organizations want to send the message that their mission is international, but it seems to exclude the United States and Canada from said mission.

1. Is that a tropicbird for PRBO, or is it a tern?

I guess the ABA tropicbird might symbolize the goal of seeing rare and interesting birds that is shared by most of the membership.
