need help on a quickie, improvised bird feeder

A squirrel broke my bird feeder broke this summer and while I have one in mind to purchase (a squirrel-proof one), it's a drive from here and I'm snowed in. I don't think I'll get out until Monday or Tuesday.

I regularly feed the birds and it's heartbreaking for me to see them flying around here looking for the food they usually get this time of year.

Can anyone recommend something I can do for the birds short-term? I have plenty of bird food, just no feeder.

1. What sort of raw materials do you have on hand?

You can always do the old standby of cutting a small hole in the front of a 2-gallon plastic milk jug, sticking a dowel below the hole, and then hanging it from a tree. If you have thistle seed, just fill an old, worn sock with the seed, knot the top and hang that up.

All else fails, just pour the seed on a plate and stick it outside.

The raccoons around here aren't hibernating and will probably get to it, too. But I'd like to try and make one for a fun little winter project.
