1. Do you have ANY idea what that could be???
I have to think we need to completely disregard some part of the description, but I don't know which part (although for some reason I think it's the pink cheeks...)! Do you know of ANY passerine larger than a blue jay that's not one of the mimics?

2. if you two don't know, we are toast...

When I saw that, I said, Xema and Semillama must know what that is... you would think that the fact that it's Arizona would make it easier, right?

3. I just don't think it really looked like it was described.
Hopefully it comes back and a photo is procured, because I'd love to know what sort of bird it was.

5. yeah it seemed to have so many disparate elements...

isn't there some kind of on-line template where you can type in various characteristics, and thereby come up with what type of bird it was?

Maybe it was a snipe! ;)

8. People's eyes can play tricks
When I lived in England, I once swore I saw a bird in flight that doesn't appear in any bird book, and believe me, I looked. It was shaped like a pheasant, but larger, and was all black except for bright yellow edges on its wings and tail. I'm sure it was just a trick of the light, but it appeared as real as the cardinals on my front porch. To this day, I have no idea what I actually saw, or what color it really was. Perhaps it was a pheasant, though it was in the suburbs, so that would be pretty unusual. They are mostly rural birds.

4. I agree with Semillama
There's either something missing, or something extra there.

Having been a newbie birder, your eyes can fool you.
