American Kestrels

Yesterday as my wife and I were driving home from Llano (Central Texas) I saw a Kestrel swoop down from a telephone line to a fencepost, I turned arounf=d and got the binoculars. I was so thrilled that the bird didn't leave before we got back to where it was sitting.

Over the next 18 or so miles we saw 6 more - one was doing the helecopter thing. Fascinating.

Really beautiful birds.

3. Try looking in

Open, flat agricultural areas and pastures. They're small and sort of have the jizz of a mourning dove when they're perched.

2. I love Kestrels.

They're usually pretty common around here in the summer, but last year there were almost none. Someone said last years wet spring put a damper on the rodent population, so Kestrels were forced to temporarily move out.
