Years ago, we had a very old plum tree in our yard. It was down to a nub, really. The borers had eaten out the inside of the trunk and there was a hole on the east side. Chickadees moved in and made a nest at about chest height. You couldn't see the little ones in there. But when the parents were gone you could walk up to the tree, tap gently on the trunk and the babies would start their little cheep-cheep-cheep. The parents worked tirelessly to find little green worms and I was so grateful since they liked our birches.
This all came back to mind when I read one of the postings about how Chickadees use bluebird nestboxes. I'm going to make some and fasten them to the east side of any trees around here. It may be too late for this year. But a nice wintertime project for later this year.
