Dear Dr. Dean,
I congratulate you on becoming DNC chair, and I look forward to the work we will do to help reinvigorate our Party.
I hope the Party, under your leadership, does two things which I feel haven’t been done sufficiently over the past few years.
First, reach out to young people. Remember what you said on the campaign trail: “No wonder only 15% of young people vote: We don’t give them a reason to vote.” Remind them of our Party credo: “Our party is the oldest political party in America and the youngest in spirit.” Remind them that Democrats came up with the idea of Pell Grants, Social Security, and the like, while Republicans seek to destroy these programs.
Also, Frame the debate! When you face off against Ken Mehlman on “Meet the Press,” answer every label he tries to give you:
When he calls you “Liberal,” remind him that that word comes from the same root word as “free,” and that liberals advocate personal freedom.
When he talks about how you’re from the northeast, remind him that so were FDR and JFK. Of course, both Presidents Bush were born there.
When he says all Democrats do is complain, remind him that that’s all the Republicans did when Clinton was in office.
When he talks about being ‘pro-life,’ ask him how lying us into war that has resulted in 1,500 Coalition casualties and countless deaths of innocent Iraqi civilians is being ‘pro-life.’ And ask him how destroying the environment and the wildlife habitats is ‘pro-life’ (especially pro-wildlife). And when they bring up abortions, note that after a 40% drop in the number of abortions in the 1990s, the abortion rate has increased under the Bush presidency. (This is of particular concern to me, since I’m Catholic.)
Thank you for all you do, and good luck Dr. Chairman!
-Scott
P.S. Every now and then, I would encourage you to check out Democratic Underground at www.democraticunderground.com for an idea of what many progressives think about the direction of our party and our country.
