Statement by YDA President Chris Gallaway On the National Convention Hotel Boycott YDA has a 73 year history of working for Democratic and progressive ideals. We are the activists, candidates, managers, and strategists that are leading our Party to victory all across this country. We represent a broad range of interests, including the critical numbers of working men and women across this country who rely on organized labor to maintain and improve their standard of living.
As many of you have heard, the hotel that the California Young Democrats, this year’s Convention Host Committee, chose is now on organized labor’s “do not use” list. I am greatly saddened and disappointed that the hotel has not been able to make the necessary arrangements with its employees to prevent this from happening.
Currently, the California Young Democrats are working hard to handle this situation on the ground and to find alternate arrangements to meet the Young Democrats of America’s requirements that the convention be held at a union approved hotel. It is critical that we give the California Young Democrats the support they need in this effort as they deal with this situation immediately.
YDA’s National Committee will meet in Detroit the first week in June to consider the alternatives that the California Young Democrats have found. I can guarantee all of our friends and supporters that at that time, the National Committee will act in cooperation with the California Young Democrats to ensure that the values and beliefs of our Party, and the working men and women of America, are upheld.
YDA is proud to support our brothers and sisters in the labor movement, and we will not violate a “do not use” recommendation.
