In 2005, the Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked Lewis the 18th most generous donor in America, for having given or pledged $61 million to charities or institutions including Princeton University, his alma mater.
In January, Lewis followed up by donating $101 million to Princeton to improve arts education. Two weeks ago, Lewis was honored by the American Civil Liberties Union for having donated $30 million since 2000.
He's also used his wealth to promote causes ranging from legalization of marijuana to John Kerry's failed presidential campaign. He spent millions on architectural plans for a house in Lyndhurst designed by Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry that he decided not to build...
