Mom, I thought you raised me better than that!

Last night I took my 74-year young mother out for dinner. The conversation meandered over several topics, but then she said "You know, if Hillary isn't our nominee I can't see myself voting for Obama, I'll vote for McCain."

I was a bit taken aback - my mother has, to the best of my knowledge, always voted Democrat. I just blurted out "Mom, I thought you raised me better than that!" She looked a bit puzzled, so my explained something along the lines of:

"Do you know how childish that sounds? You sound like the kid who, when he can't make all the rules, threatens to take is ball and go home. Not only that, but you're saying that if your candidate doesn't win the nomination, you'll vote for someone who promises to give us four more years of the same failed policies that Bush has given us. Where is the logic in that? You wouldn't cut off your nose to spite your face, so why would you vote for McCain? I'm an Edwards supporter and I'll vote for Obama. To do otherwise is insane."

Well, she took pause and then agreed that I was right. Mom's still pretty sharp.

Your mom is no dummy. I always have voted democrat and no way would i consider voting for obama. He is this generations Elmer Gantry and people have fell into his seductive say nothing rhetoric

I mean one take on his friends tells the tell. You cannot trust a man who lies with crazy hate filled preachers and former weather underground folks period. Also the man on the record in the senate is beyond non descript.

But obama cause you got all this liberal guilt and are fooled by words not deeds you are amazed. You ought to be ashamed of yourself and your ethics. Clearly I trust you never pass that on to your children.

So without hillary who is not some crown princess either the vote by the millions of democrats go to McCain.
You see being a democrat does not mean you are syncophant for party line.

The dumbing down of America continues. Few have or live by core ethics or values but vapid reckless phrases that make you go pump pump in your heart.

Try some thinking . Try to find your core values and become heart smart.

about someone you've never met and has posted very little.

I don't "check-in" very often and, while your post occurred quite some time ago, I just have to respond.

I'm not a "Kid" - haven't been one for a looong time. And while I may be a "kid" to my mother, you certainly haven't earned the right to refer to me as one.

Every campaign speech by every candidate could be tossed into the category of "seductive say nothing rhetoric". We don't know what is empty promises and what is not until after a candidate is elected and takes office. Remember all the rhetoric that the Bush campaign spouted about reversing Roe v. Wade during the last two presidential election cycles? How did that turn out?

I will determine who I will trust and what the criteria for that trust will be. I know plenty of fine church-going conservatives who rail on the relationship issue. They say something to the effect of "He's known the man for 20 years. How can he not have taken his teachings to heart?" Then they'll turn around and spread lies and innuendo, and denigrate the poor rather than helping them. It seems they can go to church and not be affected by what the preacher says, why should it be any different for Senator Obama.

We'll never know how I (or anyone else) would react IF Senator Clinton went to a church led by David Duke. She hasn't, so I'm not going to speculate how I would react. And you are certainly in no position to speculate on how I would react.

What the hell is "liberal guilt"? I'm not choosing Senator Obama because he's black any more than I'm not choosing Senator Clinton because she's a woman. Neither was my first choice. I chose Senator Obama because I believe that he is more likely to beat Senator McCain. Getting failed Republican policies out of the White House is my primary concern.

Yes, the dumbing-down of America continues, but not from the direction you seem to think. It seems to me that you would choose Senator McCain even though his proposed policies are diametrically opposite Senator Clinton's. Why is that? You would vote for someone whose core values are the opposite of yours simply because your candidate didn't "get the nod"? How petty! How childish! You may have core values, but it seems you're ready to disregard them if you don't get your way.
