Do Your Liberal/Democratic Stickers Get A Bad Response?

Before the 2008 election I had an OBAMA'08 bumper sticker on my van with peace symbol stickers on either side of it. I don't know how many times I got flipped off by total strangers. And this is in Maryland, a very blue state. It pissed me off to the point where I volunteered for his campaign. I just put on my OBAMA 2012 sticker and the same thing happened yesterday. I didn't give the finger to everyone I saw with a McCain/Palin sticker although I didn't like McCain and thought Palin was a nut. I commented on this to a friend and she said that her "I'm Pro-Choice And I Vote" sticker used to get a similar response, even to the point of people yelling at her in parking lots! Has anyone else experienced this?

and I get a little paranoid when I borrow it, but I've only received positive comments.

With a few scratches on it myself. I just really don't care. Just as long as they don't slash tires, break windows, or sugar the gas tank I could care less.

I think paint scratches add character to a bumper sticker car anyways. It says you are not intimidated.

19. I made my own version of the Dubya parody sticker.

The one that said "WTF" instead of "W04."



Only the one I did had 2 small, glistening, black drops of oil coming out of
the navy blue "F" on the right, as the hollow "W" on the left stood at the
'half-empty'/'half-full' level, half crimson and half white.

With one small, shiny red drip falling out of the W.

So it was kind of a hybrid "WTF" and "No Blood for Oil"
full-on, double-barreled F' You to the Reich Wingers.

Almost got rammed by a yellow cab, and a pick-up,
and it was probably a good thing we didn't have
concealed carry in this state, at that time.

I don't know for sure, but in hindsight it didn't win me any friends
on the company parking lot. Which wasn't a good thing.

I don't often get confronted in person. I'll calmly discuss issues if that's feasible.

I just smile and say "thank you!" when I get flipped off or sworn at. They hate that.

5. Depends where you go

I live in Naples, Florida, which is a very red part of the state. You see a lot of Republican, right wing, religious stickers, BUT at the school district where I worked it was the complete opposite. A LOT of Obama and liberal themed stickers. There was one family that came to pick up the kids at school that had a bumper sticker, "We are a PRO-CHOICE FAMILY of 4". Wonder where that got that? School staff always used to give them a thumbs up on that sticker, but I can imagine with the sea of Pro-Life plates in this town, they must have gotten a lot of very negatives comments on that. The extremists don't like mothers and fathers who are Pro-choice. Kinda flies in the face of all their arguments.

For what it's worth, I NEVER saw one of those Florida Pro-Life Plates in the parking lot at school.

I just responded to you over on the Choice forum a while ago. "We are a PRO-CHOICE FAMILY of 4". I love it that they get lots of thumbs up from school staff! Although I do get some nasty reactions, a lot of people have also been very positive with thumbs up, peace signs, etc. I respond positively to the liberal stickers - Obama gets the thumbs up and anti-war gets a peace sign most of the time. I don't like the feeling of people trying to intimidate me for my politics

10. Sorry To Hear About That!

I'm always amazed, but shouldn't be, by the reaction those stickers get. Back in 2003, when Bush was gearing up for war, I slapped the biggest peace symbol decal I could find on the back of my minivan. My ex, who was a Limbaugh (ugh!) fan and total control freak went nuts. How embarrassing it was for him to be married to a woman advocating peace! But I digress. For now I'll go with "Obama 2012" and my peace symbol magnet. I'll probably add "99%." If I hear much more about this "personhood" movement I'll get an appropriate sticker to address that issue, too!

When I was trading in a car, there was some snickering and nose upturning at the dealership over my John Kerry sticker. Well, I scuttled the deal (they were getting ready to switch cars) and bought somewhere else.

I got 'flipped off' actually the guy pointed his finger like a gun at me as I was driving a Mexican Registered car in Texas. Followed me for miles or so it seemed.
I almost got car jacked in Miami after taking a wrong turn (Tourist Registration Plates were in force at that time).
I asked a Cop in NY for directions and he replied 'Do I look like a fuckin' Tour Guide'

Could go on but won't bore you ..

Opened a door for an old white women last month at a store
instead of thanks she said ....fuck you and she could of said nothing but that is how it is now - musta been 70+

would of let the door slam on her but not that type of person and also she could of called the cops who could have then arrested me for assault or some shit

More scary than hilarious ...and I do love this country so did my parents and grandparents who lived here and I assume so did their parents who came as immigrants

Never had it on my car but I appreciate the sentiment. I used to have the "Pro-child, Pro-family, Pro-choice" sticker. I thought that said it all. "Pro-choice, Anti-Bush" was a good one. I actually made a point to compliment the woman who displayed that one. In all, I think the reproductive rights stickers get a more negative reaction from conservatives than the other liberal stickers because they are so wound up about that issue.

18. my story

At my old job, there was a church around the block from the office where I had my job. One day the lot was full, so I parked in the church parking lot. I have a few bumper stickers on my car, including an Obama 2008 sticker, a Co-Exist sticker, a pro-Choice sticker, and a few others. I came back 3 hours later to go and drive to lunch.

My tires had been slashed, the windows had been broken, and the words "You're going to Hell" were written on the hood in red spray paint. Someone had poured sand from the church sandbox into my gas tank, and had also stolen my hubcaps.

There was no way that it was done for anything other than my bumper stickers.

I was once refused service at a Chinese restaurant for having a Free Tibet bumper sticker. I later found out that the owner also voted for McCain in the 2008 election, so the feeling is now mutual. I don't eat there anymore anyways.

I have a reverse story. Two years ago I was going to buy a tractor and was at a dealer and we made the deal. He wanted me to see his parts department so we went into the showroom. My wife also needed to use the restroom so when we got inside I opened a door I thought was the restroom but was a closet filled with McCain 08, Santorum signs and other Republican yard signs. I went into the parts department and he had all kinds of conservative, anti-Democrat and anti liberal signs everywhere on the walls. When my wife came out of the restroom I said let's go, we're not buying anything here. The dealer asked what was wrong and I just told him I changed my mind. We bought the tractor elsewhere.

Just another good reason to live in Hawaii. With Hanabusa's victory in '10, all Congressional reps are once again Dems. It must be tough sometimes living in red states. The snarly intolerance that some of you have described here seems all too common with right-wingers. It is part of the personality of many on the right, along with voter supression, Rovian election trickery, and intimidation. They support democracy as long as they win. And they just love the constitution, as long as it works for them.

Luckily for me, I work as a paralegal at a law firm for two female attorneys who are staunch ACLU/Lawyer's Guild people. I got hired after 9/11, when Bush was beating his war drums. During my interview, during small talk, I enthusiastically joined in as my interviewer expressed her disgust with Bush. I still think that helped me get hired (being in my mid-40s at the time)! Never any problem with anti-war/liberal buttons on my jacket/purse at work. Not the same with some of my friends working in corporate America who were basically intimidated by their bosses against displaying any type of dissent (not "supporting the troops"). Corporate America doesn't like pro-choice sentiment, either.

Glad I started this discussion and I thank everyone for their input.

I like it when people are up front and public about their progressive (OK, liberal) beliefs and I don't want anyone to be intimidated. Let's be visible and encourage others to do the same.
