Who will T.H. Church be playing in Spiderman 3?
I heard prior to the news of his casting that the villain was going to be Kraven the Hunter, but now they are saying that it will be a secret.

I'm having problems envisioning who Thomas Hayden Church would play. Any ideas?

1. Looks like Venom will be the villain
Here's the lounge thread where we were kicking it around.

Looks like Church will be playing Eddie Brock/Venom. Not a bad casting decision, IMO.

I agree, not a bad casting decision. But it doesn't sound right to Harry Knowles.

In other news, in a particular story at a site called Press Connects they have an interview with effects dude Tim Phoenix. This article has been around for a few days, even before the official announcement from Raimi that Thomas Hayden Church was cast as the villain, but now everybody is jumping on this article saying it's fact that the villains will be Venom and Man-Wolf.

Man-Wolf makes a sort of sense since John Jameson is already in the series, but from everything I've heard THERE WILL BE NO VENOM in this film. I haven't heard who the villains are from my sources, so I'm not saying this as a fact, but I am saying that from every indication I've gotten, Raimi doesn't like Venom and wouldn't choose him as the main villain.

3. Thanks for that link
Been a lot of misinformation floating around out there on this one.

I really hope they don't go back to the Goblin with Harry in the second film. I'd rather they get a new villain for this one.

I wonder who Church is going to play then? He wouldn't seem right for Kraven at all.

Maybe they are casting Church as John Jameson even though he was played by someone else in #2?

4. Greg's Preview Thoughts
Greg's Preview Thoughts

3/29/05 - According to AICN, the villain Thomas Haden Church will be playing may be the Sandman, a criminal who has the power to, you know... turn into sand. Never one of Spidey's brighter foes, there's something refreshing about Sandman's chief interest in a) trying to get rich robbing banks and the like and b) swatting away that Spider-Punk that keeps getting in his way. That, at least, is a quick summary of the character's history in the comics over the last forty years. Raimi's version might be a bit different, but it's still, to this old school Spidey fan, a better choice than any version of Venom. If Sandy (as Spidey might call him) can take the fight down to the beach (Coney Island?), he has the potential of being much more cinematic than Venom fans probably think he would've been. I also think Sandman probably fits in more smoothly with the continuing Harry Osborn arc. Now, we just have to get confirmation Harry Knowles' tip is on the money.

5. I just don't see the Sandman carrying enough story to be a feature bad guy
But if he's just visual "muscle" with the main story arc turning to Harry-Goblin (or more preferably, the Lizard) then it could really work.

6. but Church is an Oscar nominee now
not to say that he is above being a peripheral story, but that is worth considering

7. That's what I was thinking
Could they get him in a movie as just a secondary bad guy?

Maybe Church is a Spidey fan and would just be thrilled to get on screen?

I do know that they would have to make significant changes to Sandman's backstory to make him viable as a feature villain.

Can't wait to see how it turns out

8. I don't like this at all.
Just like TH Church, they announced that Topher Grace will play a role in SM3, but they didn't say which character. Fuck this coy shit.
