Which comic characters are definitely libs?
Green Arrow is famous for his liberal philosophy. Likewise, Superman can see an aura around all living things and respects all life. During his career has battled the KKK and removed the threat of nuclear arms.

Which other comic book characters are liberals? Which ones definitely are NOT?

1. Cpt America is now liberal...
I also think Bats is although embrassing the vigilante angle as of late probably takes that one away......

2. Jesse Custer, The Preacher
although he leans way libertarian, his social views are pretty liberal.

Professor X of course is a bleeding heart liberal.

So is Hank McCoy and numerous other Marvel characters.

Ultimate Thor is another good example of a liberal character.

3. GA is definitely a liberal.

From what I know, here's a list of comic book liberals/conservatives:

Liberals:

Green Arrow
possibly Batman (he helps the poor with his wealth)
Spider-Man
Professor X
Superman
Wonder Woman

Conservatives:

Black Lightning
Lex Luthor
Hawkman
possibly Batman (as pertaining to his crimefighting philosophy)
Rorschach (from Watchmen--hardcore conservative)
I guess Captain America

4. What about Iron Man?
He seemed to be a conservative, at least his earlier incarnations seemed to indicate that.

8. He was a cold warrior & weapons contractor in the 1960's.
Arguably a Kennedy style hawk or a flat out conservative.

Still a great character either way.

Or, at least, profoundly reconsider his support for it?

wouldn't it be fair to move Captain America into the liberal catagory?

12. Heh- Not if you ask Steve Ditko!
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 01:17 PM by Dr Fate
I'm sure you know that Ditko & some of his characters are Randian.

Reportedly, this is what caused the split between him and Stan Lee- who was generaly a progressive.

Do a google on Ditko's "Mr A" & his Charlton characters(the basis for Watchmen characters- but you probably knew that) for some interesting reading...

16. A few...
Kyle Rayner is certainly a liberal. Right before they canceled his series so Hal Jordan could come back, he had the whole storyline where he left Earth in disgust after his friend Terry was the victim of a hate crime.

Batman's a liberal, although he's too wrapped up in his personal darkness to show much emotion.

Ones that aren't are Guy Gardner (the jerkass Green Lantern), Lobo, and (on the non-DC side of things) the Punisher

19. Dude, Lobo doesn't have a political philosophy.
He's a straight cold-blooded killer. (This is the third time I've posted this on DU in the past two days; I never get tired of it:)

He kills for the fun of it. If anything, he's an anarchist. He's the last of his kind because he killed all the others of his kind.

Gardner's a jerk as written by Giffen and DeMatteis, but lately he reminds me more of a hard-ass NCO who knows his shit and doesn't take any guff as they've written him in Green Lantern Corps.

Captain Atom is a conservative without a doubt. His intentions are good, obviously, but he has that military-style deference to authority that most superheroes lack.

'Never breaks his word'.

Ever.

But yeah, a guy who gets a writ of immortality for beating the crap out of the entire heavenly host really doesn't have much of a 'political' philosophy.

20. Brubaker, the current writer of Captain America, on his take on Cap:
http://www.newsarama.com/pages/Marvel/Bru_Cap.htm

...NRAMA: Speaking of that though…what are Cap’s politics?

EB: Well, my view of Cap’s politics are that you’ve got a guy who was raised during the depression, and was created by FDR. In my mind that would make him a New Deal Democrat. He’s a guy who saw our society at its lowest point, and saw what investing in our society could be. That’s when the Democratic party really came to power.

But it’s like Thomas Jefferson – he created the Republican party, but he certainly wouldn’t be a member of what the Republican party is today.

So, looking at that, I don’t think that a guy who grew up in the ‘30s and probably voted for FDR in his first election would look at the democrats of today and think that they’re the same people that he voted for...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=3972

..."My idea is he's more the embodiment of the ideals of America, of what America could be or should be, as opposed to what America often is. To a large degree, Cap is a solider so he's going to follow orders, but he's not necessarily going to follow orders he doesn't believe are right, whereas a lot of other soldiers would. I see him as more of a Thomas Paine or Thomas Jefferson kind of patriot, where he sees what America's supposed to be and fights for that. For example, he's not a guy who would really be in favor of corporate-run political campaigns, you know?"...

27. Most mainstream characters have run the gambit of ........
the political spectrum over their lifetime. A few, Green Arrow and Green Lantern to name two, have almost always been liberal, but most have a long history that change with the times.

My favorite character, Spider Jerusalem, is more of a social libertarian. He believes in free speech, separation of church and state, equality for all, but also supports the right to bear arms.

Some good political comics: DMZ by Brian Wood, Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, Y the Last Man by Brian K Vaughn, Shooting War, Finding Peace are all overtly political. But if you look hard enough you can find social political commentary in almost any comic book.
