1. Alan Moore

I just finished "From Hell" and boy, was I impressed! That man can WRITE.

That graphic novel is a great example of a source material blowing a movie adaption out of the water. The Hughes Brothers didn't even come close to how creepy and frightening and disturbing the graphic novel is.

2. Yeah...

and I think Moore's work in the eighties had a lot to do with DC, especially, doing more "serious" and mature-themed comics. I'd say he's probably the best on the list. Warren Ellis, though, get my vote as best of the current writers (Moore is pretty much retired now, and not doing much).

3. I voted Alan Moore, but...

I want to throw some props Mike Carey's (Lucifer) and Neil Gaiman's (The Sandman)way. Both are damn good, but it is hard to beat Moore. His Swamp Thing run is some of the best stuff I've ever read in any genre.

That is the best comic story I've ever read, hands down. It made me respect and get interested in the Silver Age. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was also enjoyable. Watchmen was well-written...but I don't like darker storylines as much.

16. Watchmen is more nostalgic & traditional than people give it credit for.

It's not all dark- there are some good old traditional comic devices in there as well.

So many people hail it as "radical"- but to me its just a logical extension of traditional comics.

I love "Whatever Happened.." too.

18. Not quite...

but at the end of the story I just kind of sat there. I'm not old enough to have read pre-Crisis Superman comics, and didn't realize how much Byrne, etc. had really screwed up the character and what he stands for.

So the story, while it was sad, was an introduction into a brand new world that I knew about. Now I'm a giant pre-Crisis Supes fan.

If not- RUN dont walk and pick up both volumes.

It's Moore's clever tribute to the golden, silver & bronze age Superman- it is outstanding and all the flash backs are done in old-time dot matrix style...

Coincidentally, have you heard of Moore's unpublished graphic novel "Superman Burns in Hell?" I was looking for a proposal or something to read on the Internet, but couldn't find it.

15. the re done run of MiracleMan

originally published in england the first couple of issues was b/w and in short segments...in america they colored it and put out whole issues...incredible...that issue (3 or 4) when he realized his true nature just blew me away like no other comic book ever has or had (with the possible exeption of busiek's thrunderbirds #1...or the final issue of his astro city's "confessors" arc.....)

the issue where he fights young miracle man is awesome...

in my opinion way better than v is for vendetta...

No one has mentioned "Supreme", "1963" or "Tom Strong" yet- some of his most fun titles.
