3. don't speak it...
but I do a fair job of reading it...

Knowing both English and German seems to go a long way in being able to figure out a fair amount of Dutch.

4. Same here....
I discovered that on a trip to Amsterdam... The German knowledge helps a lot, if you read the Dutch phonetically.

5. Listen to it a lot
During dinner, I listen to shortwave radio. Sometimes the BBC doesn't come in to clear. But Radio Nederlands sounds fine. And I understand quite a bit. it's been a while since I was over there and had to speak, so I don't know how I'd fare.
