Speaking to the media at his first press conference since becoming Volvo’s chief, new CEO Stefan Jacoby said that he wants the Swedish automaker to begin producing more evocative vehicles.
“Volvo stands for safety, solidity and reliability but the emotional positioning of the brand is not sharp enough. Volvo needs to find a Swedish-based, unique positioning,” Jacoby said.
Volvo has long attempted to shake its conservative image – especially with its latest S60 sedan, which is being marketed as a “naughty Volvo” in many countries.
Jacoby arrived at Volvo earlier this month after giving up the top position at Volkswagen’s North American office. He replaced Stephen Odell, who remained at Ford of Europe after the automaker sold Volvo to China’s Geely Holding Company.
Although Volvo is the larger of Sweden’s two automakers, analysts have questioned the automaker’s future despite the apparent size and power of its new owners. To combat these notions, Jacoby said that Volvo will take advantage of its relatively small size by working with outside groups to create.
There are opportunities to cooperate with suppliers, with maybe other competitors as well, but also, of course, to find synergies with our sister company Geely in the future,” he told the media.
