I always read the changing oil every 6000/7500 miles instead of 3000 is OK to do but ...

... I never read anything about whether lengthening the time interval between oil changes is OK to do or not.

I don't drive much so I always have the three months interval between changes go by long before I get 3000 miles on the oil.

Is it OK to go longer than the recommended 3 month interval between changes? Or is that time period between oil changes more critical than the number of miles between oil changes?

Anyone know the answer to this? Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

1. There are so many variables here.

Lots of stuff come into play in regards to your car's motor oil:
1. The car/engine
2. Your driving habits
3. The climate/conditions in which you drive
4. The type of oil you use (regular/blend/full synthetic)
5. If you have a car warranty

If you have a car under warranty, follow the manufacturer guidelines so they can't deny you a claim. Were I driving a car without a warranty, that was a typical car (not a sports/exotic/antique) I would tend to not go so much by the time but the miles. This is a good conversation to have with a mechanic that you trust.

2. You gave great advice

I called the mechanic I trust. He said the miles were much more important than the time between oil changes. He said he wouldn't hesitate to stretch the time interval out to a year if I wasn't putting the miles on it. Said it wouldn't hurt a thing.
