It's that time of year again folks, time for Detroit's "Woodward Dream Cruise", the largest classic car show/cruise on the planet. The Cruise started about 1996 when a group sought a way to raise funds for a children's soccer league. Today, that show has grown into a classic car lover's dream as Woodward is filled and lined with about 40,000 classics.
The "one day" event attracts up to 1.5 million spectators who line the curbs of Woodward from Detroit's Eight Mile Rd. up to Pontiac, MI, sixteen miles away.
Along the route, the parking lots and grassy areas are jammed with the most beautiful automobiles you will ever see: Originals and restoration projects. Antiques and hot rods. You'll even see handbuilt originals.
I was out on Woodward yesterday, one week before the offical Cruise, and the street was filled with classic cruisers. Every night this week, leading up to the official event, the local, and visiting cruisers will be out on Woodward in anticipation of the big event next Saturday.
On the day of the cruise, Woodward will be so jammed that traffic in the 12 Mile to 16 Mile area will crawl along at about 1/2 MPH, but it will be the funnest traffic jam you'll ever be in, or witness. It's an overload of eye candy for car entusiasts.
The ROAR of the engines, the personality of the cruisers, the chrome...
It all adds up to a MUST see for any classic car entusiast in the world. If you've never attended the Woodward Dream Cruise, and if you love antique cars and hot rods, then consider the Woodward Cruise to be your "Mecca", your one event that you must travel for at least once in your life.
Here's a few photos from the last couple of Cruises:
