Dismembered Woman's Body Found In Oven, On Stove
"NEW ORLEANS -- Authorities discovered the dismembered remains of a woman in her French Quarter apartment after her boyfriend jumped to his death from a luxury hotel with a five-page confession note in his pocket.

New Orleans police said it's one of the most brutal murders they've ever seen, and neighbors in the Quarter are in disbelief.

Police said that the 26-year-old woman's body was found Tuesday night, dismembered, in her apartment. Sources told New Orleans TV station WDSU that detectives found her body parts on the stove, in the oven, and the refrigerator."

"A woman who identified herself as Priestess Miriam in the Voodoo Spiritual Temple and Cultural Center below the apartment said the couple had only recently moved in.

"Son of a gun, it just doesn't fit," said Frank Newman, another neighbor."

1. Sad and disturbing on so many levels.
I can't imagine what drives a person to do something like that.

I went to a local N.O. website, and there learned that this couple was one that stayed after Katrina, helping to clean up. From the sounds of the article, they had been thru hell and back after the storm. There are so many mental health issues now in the city, because of everything that has happened. As tragic and disturbing as this is, on some level, it doesn't surprise me, given the lack of resources available to the city. There are only a couple of hospitals up and running, and that may not even be at pre-katrina levels. There is a shortage of doctors, and medical staff. Suicides and depression are waaayyyyy up. People are desperate, and feel like they have no place to turn.

I think the gruesome nature of this murder speaks to the mental state of this man. Its a tragedy all around.

here's a couple of links to more background about this murder/suicide:

edit to add: my original point was to say that even if this man had recognized that he needed help, I am wondering if there would have been any available to him. However, after reading both articles, it doesn't seem that he knew he needed help, and his friends didn't know either.
