Saturday 02/17- Interesting HBO movie on tonight: 'Longford'

Jim Broadbent stars as Lord Frank Longford.

Broadbent is discussing Myra Hindley, who, with her boyfriend Ian Brady, was at the center of one of England's most shocking crimes of the 20th century: the Moors murders, a series of sadistic child slayings from 1963 through 1965 that, in its wake, unmoored the career of one of Britain's most promising politicians.

HBO's Longford, airing at 7 p.m. Saturday, stars Broadbent, an Oscar winner for his role in Iris, as Lord Frank Longford, a brilliant if eccentric parliamentarian who, believing most criminals capable of rehabilitation, torpedoed his career in trying to help the universally loathed Hindley get paroled.

Though the case is more than 40 years old, it endures like a freshly picked scab in England.

2. Brady and Hindley are the British Manson family
others have higher body counts, but to the English popular imagination, the pair are the devil(s) incarnate

3. the movie got that across pretty well
I have to hand it to the filmmakers: there was no violence shown in the movie at all, but you understood that Hindley and Brady were monsters. The screenwriter was the one who wrote 'The Last King of Scotland', the outstanding movie with Forrest Whitaker, about Idi Amin. And the director was the one who directed 'The Queen', with Helen Mirren. So all the elements were right to be a great movie, and it was. I love Jim Broadbent, and he played Lord Longford, and Samantha Morton played Myra Hindley. both gave excellent performances. I don't know who played Brady, but his performance was amazing; it was intense and diabolical.

I was unfamiliar with the Moors murders before seeing this movie, but I want to read more about them. Do you recommend any books or articles?

4. "Beyond Belief" by Emlyn Williams is quite good..
Brady himself has published a book of his insane ramblings from prison I haven't read it yet.
I am particular fascinated by Killer Couples: Brady and Hendley, Starkweather and Fugate, Douglas Clark and Carole Bundy, Gerald and Charlene Gallagos, etc...
In those cases, it seens, to me, that one (the male) is driven by a twisted pathology, while the other (the female) is essentially a moral idiot who goes along with and assists in the depravity.
There seems to be a different pathology at work when killer teams are comprised of two men.
