After having a friend recommend this a while back, I went looking for it in a used book store the other day. To my surprise, they had it shelved in their true crime section.

A few years ago, a couple of deranged (read: sociopathic) fans of the "Lord of the Rings" film franchise devised a "plan" to run a fake non-profit organization to get in good with the actors in the LotR movies. The result? Was horrifying. The story of how they were eventually found out? Is epic. This tale is chock full of bizarre, rarely seen craziness--delusional depressives, evil airlines, a woman pretending to be a man...

I read it in one sitting. Highly recommended.

1. Kick. Because I just reread it and found all kinds of new shite I missed the first time.

Since I failed to mention this before, I think this book is also important for anyone who is new to the charitable giving game. This book and the websites of the woman who wrote it have some great tips on how to spot shady non-profit and alleged non-profit groups, as well as manipulators, sociopaths and other toxic shit. I'm glad I found it since I feel it's better prepared me to defend myself against Crazy.

:hi: I'm going to look for this one. My elderly Mom gets hundreds of charity requests and I can't convince her that a good percentage are bogus. Of course, she has some dementia and this probably won't convince her either. Looking forward to reading this.
