I got hooked on it last year and it was all because of Minka, one of the female detectives. She is a professional, through and through, which means she cares a lot about her job. Also, she's tough. She minces no words and she tells it straight, just the way she sees it.
What's good about this series is that it's the detectives themselves who move the plot along. It's their logic, their persistence, their hunches--all the elements used by a detective in solving a crime.
I liked the promo for this show. It is narrated by Minka and is about how she got on the force:
http://investigation.discovery.com/videos/the-shift-meet-the-cast-meet-detective-minka.htmlI agree that some of these shows are depressing because of the petty reasons people are killed, but for some reason that element bothers me less on this show. Maybe it's because of what I said about Minka in my first paragraph--she cares about her job. When the detective cares, it makes the viewer feel like the life that was lost matters.
