Mounties FINALLY admit there's a serial killer
stalking Edmonton prostitutes. Only took a couple of years.

Police in Alberta have released a profile of a man they believe has killed several prostitutes in Edmonton, and are offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Along with at least eight deaths that the RCMP are calling confirmed homicides, they're also investigating the suspicious deaths of two other sex-trade workers since 1998.

The bodies of 20 women have been found in rural areas around Alberta's capital since 1983. Four were discovered in the first seven months of 2003 alone.

1. Thanks for posting this. I had no idea this was going on.
Wonder why they waited so long to decide it was a serial killer?

4. I'd like to know too
While I wouldn't imagine they'd be spewing out a lot of information, they've been extraordinarily cautious and tight lipped about it all.

Considering they started a task force to look into it in 2003 (at the time it was a couple of murders and reopening old files), I would say they've known for quite a while what they're looking for.

I hope they find this monster soon.

2. Strange that it took 20 bodies before they came out with this
How rampant is serial killing in Canada? Do they have as much history with multiple murders like we do here in the states?

3. We certainly have had them
Robert Pickton would be the most 'prolific': http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/robert_pickton/11.html?sect=2 (they've laid 12 more charges against Pickton since that bio, bringing his total to 27 - there is little doubt he killed many more)

Clifford Olsen is another one: http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/olson/1.html

Bernardo & Homolka: http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/notorious/bernardo/index_1.html

Allan Legere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Legere

I'll have to look into this more. I would imagine I could add to the list, but the above are the most infamous.

Btw...they don't believe all the Edmonton murders are the work of a serial killer. Some have thought there may be 2...that's an even scarier prospect than one. There's been 7 or 8 found in the past 2 years that fit a pattern, so he is stepping up his campaign, so to speak.

And you know if those were university students disappearing, they'd have acted far quicker. :-(
