Jury selection begins for second capital murder trial
AUSTIN (AP) - Jury selection began Monday for the second capital murder trial in the 1991 shooting deaths of four teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop.
Michael Scott, 28, could face the death penalty if convicted in the murders of Amy Ayers, 13, Eliza Hope Thomas, 17, and sisters Jennifer and Sarah Harbison, 17 and 15. The girls were bound, gagged and shot in the head before the store was set on fire.
Scott is the second suspect to go on trial in the case. Robert Springsteen IV, 27, was convicted and sentenced to death in June 2001. A third defendant, Maurice Pierce, 26, has been jailed since his arrest in October 1999.
Police arrested a fourth suspect, 25-year-old Forrest Welborn, but murder charges were later dropped when a two grand juries refused to indict him.
