Scott Wilson "Dick Hickock" of "In Cold Blood" called my house...

yesterday. I heard the phone ring, but didn't pick it up. A little later, I listened to the messages and there was the voice of a great American actor.
My wife is writing an entry on Wilson for an encyclopedia, and they have been trying to contact one another for the project. When she arrived I home last evening, I told her that Wilson had called. When she asked what he said. I replied that he said he "was gonna blow hair all over them walls" She has lived with me long enough to know that I was just being "funny"
While his performance in "In Cold Blood" is phenomenal, Wilson is certainly not limited by that role. The man has an incredible body of work. To me, he is the consummate working actor.

4. I have mixed feelings about it...

I think that Capote is one of the best writers this country has ever produced, but too often the man's work was overshadowed by his life.
I've always hoped that after the image of the flamboyant gadfly faded away, people would start appreciating him for the quality of his writing. Don't get me wrong; when I was growing up Capote was the most famous writer in the world (Remember when they had real authors like Capote on talk shows?), and I can still be amused by many of his antics and pronouncements. However, I hope that people will value his exquisite writing without the baggage of his personal excess.
It's encouraging that the biopic covers the period when he was writing "In Cold Blood", because he worked so hard on it.

8. Capote was a brilliant writer

One of my favorites. Unfortunately, his life also makes for very good reading.

I stopped reading bios of famous writers since most of them are dull -- a lot of writing and drinking. Not so Capote. His life is chock-full of good stories. My favorite one is the time Neil Simon recruited him to appear in a movie. He, of course, wanted Truman Capote to be in his movie. In other words, he wanted America's famous eccentric to "be himself" on screen. Capote would have none of that, however. He wanted to "act." Gave everyone a devil of a time ...

I'm very interested in seeing the film because, as everyone knows, In Cold Blood was Capote's finish. Probably many reasons why that happened; when you read his bio you feel sorry for the poor man. It f*cked him up (more so than he already was), to be unable to summon more out of him. I love, LOVE his early stories. I've read some of his last ones -- YEECH!

He stars in one of my favorite little quirky movies, the Ninth Configuration. I'm envious.

6. That is a great list of adaptations...

I would also add Larry Clark's "Bully" to that list. Clark may put off very creepy vibes (in both his work and his personality), but the movie is a stunning piece of work. It perfectly captures the essence of that whole modern suburban redneck world.

Man, I have that book and have read and re-read it numerous times. The writer has the entire Broward milieu down pat.

Schutze's book is a great account of the killing and that enviroment. Clark's movie is also great at capturing it.
