63. Hi Berry exhausted after
the show. Know the feeling though for a different reason. I get so relaxed laying there watching Keith with a ferret half a sleep on me I feel like falling a sleep. Then the music for Abrams starts, the ferret jumps up, looks around, jumps off the bed and runs to hide under it. Guess he is worried about having to gouge out his eyes if he actually saw Abrams ties.

67. You know, personally I would much rather
lie there watching a ferret with Keith half asleep on me...

Poor Giz...he could get blinded by one of Abrams' ties without even having to gouge his own eyes out...especially on an extremely pimpadelic night.

What a rough week it has been at work. I was there later tonight than ever. Fortunately got to take a cab home. At least the thing I was working on (which of course needed major revisions right before it had to go out) is DONE. And now I get my prescheduled four-day weekend. Thank heaven.

 to you and the Giz.

I am taking Monday off too. But I'll be back for the Show. Just won't be here tomorrow night, so will tape to make sure I don't miss it no matter what.

Ferrets are apparently quite smart, if they know enough to just say no to Dan Abrams' ties!

but I know Ohio is dirty. Been there, done that with the freeway being shut down. In March of '93 Clinton came here for a town hall a few miles away and I stood on the overpass and watched him go by in his limo with absolutely no cars on the road because they had shut it down. The cops were there, but they let us stand there. It was pretty cool, though, being as it was him. He had the light on in the back and I could actually see him working on his notes on a yellow legal pad.

it's lucky Keith doesn't live in Ohio...or by now, his entire baseball card collection would've been seized by right of eminent domain!

"Sorry, Mr. Olbermann, but we really need these cards for the state workers' comp fund. We'll give you fair market value, don't worry."

"FAIR MARKET VALUE?!?!? I don't WANT fair market value!!!! I want my CARDS, DAMMIT! I don't COLLECT them for money, I collect them for FUN!"

"Sorry, Mr. Olbermann. Here in the State of Ohio we don't collect anything for fun. We collect only as an investment in the state insurance fund. Here, have a nice bottle of Colorado wine. It'll help take the edge off."

54. You know, this is a hard one to call
It's easy to file away these parents as religious loonies, but at the same time, if the kid says she doesn't want radiation...should she not have some say?

Medical treatment is no picnic. If she were an adult we wouldn't tell her she had to have treatment if she didn't want it. But somehow because she's a kid we tell her she has to?

There's no easy answer to this. I know kids aren't always the best judges but they know what kind of treatment is tough. As much as any adult does.

Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 08:49 PM by CC
someone go through it. And count in all the things the news isn't saying. A friend of ours went through radiation for non-Hodgkin's. You are miserable, burned, sick all the time, about the time you can keep food down again its time for a new round. It can cause all sorts of other cancers eventually, plus other radiation diseases. He had to sign off on abut 3 pages of small type of future side effects. Once you have one series of radiation treatments you can never have radiation again, even for something else. The doctors will never say it will cure you hundred percent. You do well to get a 50/50 from them. This is what they told a 37 year old man, imagine being 14 and hearing all the things you might get. Not sure but with her being female, it most likely will deny her the chance of ever having kids. I know in Kurt's case they told him not to have kids for at least 2 years after treatment was over.

So it might not be just religion and any decision with long term consequences like those radiation can cause should be decided by all involved, specially the kid. At the same time I would most likely try to get my kid to go through it to save the child's life. But there is a selfish part to that, I wouldn't want to lose my child. For the state of Texas, that kills babies and others it decides aren't worth keeping alive against the parents/loved ones wishes to now say they will take a child and force treatment is hypocritical at the minimum.

Finished the rant.

75. Thanks, CC. I was thinking I'm the only one.
And if you doubt the seriousness of it anytime, go visit the radiation unit at your local hospital. You will have to go to the basement because the NRC makes them encase the whole unit in I don't know how many feet of lead. Generally it's not a cheerful place. You'll see happier faces on iodine bottles.

87. Well here it is
for you then... In addition to writing his own copy for Countdown, Keith Olbermann also writes a blog at msnbc.msn.com, raising the question: just how much time does he spend on a computer? "Generally speaking, I'm on the computer reading, writing scripts and looking for stories," he said. "Probably 12 hours total. ... I knew that when I got an Internet connection at home, I'd never get off the damn thing. And I was right."

143. Somehow, I did not see that part of the article!
Let's see...

12 hours a day on the computer

6 to 8 hours for sleep (or at least he should get that much)

1 hour for Countdown

That leaves 5 to 3 hours or so a day (on weekdays) for eating, bathroom and everything else in life. Including attending baseball games. Which can last as long as three hours. (If baseball game lasts longer than four hours, seek immediate medical attention.)

When does he have time to stop and smell the roses, poor boy??

Our Rad Thpy unit has the most friendly, supportive staff in the whole hospital. Every year they hold a pool party, at their expense, for cancer survivors. The clients like them so much the unit is always full of gifts of chocolates and flowers. I'm not defending all units, I have no frame of reference, but they've helped many members of my family.

107. I don't think they were dissing the staff, Sparks
just how draining the whole experience can be. It's not like getting a dental X-ray, but most folks don't appreciate that. Mary had non-Hodgkins years ago and was fortunate enough not to need the radiation, largely because they blasted her into the Stone Age with chemo. It was rough, but the nurses were fantastic.

144. No, I was definitely NOT dissing the staff.
I spoke of the patients and their families. They are not down there for fun. I get the impression somehow that just because radiation isn't chemo, people think it is no big deal. Not so. It's an ordeal for people. It's isolating, can be painful and is also, from what I understand, quite fatiguing in the long run.

Bless anyone who has the fortitude to be able to WORK in that kind of environment, trying to help people in that situation, and doing their best to help those people keep their spirits up. After all, the people who come down for treatment, once they make the decision, have to go there--they don't have a choice. People who work there have CHOSEN to come work there every day when they could have done something else with their careers. Bless 'em.

131. Hi Sparky and just
saw this before going downstairs. I would never cut down staff and even doctors. The hub has been through non-Hodgkin's three time so far. First time with CHOP, second a different chemo and third time Rituxin. We both loved both the doctor and the staff. I would send anyone I know to his doctor. But even the doctor told us sometimes the treatment is as bad as the disease, and that they always are balancing between doing enough and not doing to much and causing more damage than needed. (Part of why I like him so much is he doesn't sugar coat it and is very honest with his patients.)

It's hell. Mary's only been through it once, thank God. My heart goes out to your husband for enduring three rounds of it. Most people worry about their retirement planning. Mary doesn't. She thinks she may have NHL licked, but she figures one of the other side effect nasties is gonna get her long before she reaches retirement age and she's probably right.

I would like to respectfully request that you guys take a look at my thread over here:

(and even more respectfully request that you ignore the shameful typos that arose from changing my phrasing mid-sentence)

and think about the possibilities, because if anyone would give you some camera time in those circumstances, it would be Keith.

But seriously folks...that is an idea...so long as nothing is happening with MJ...might as well give the media something to cover...it's a circus anyway, what have you got to lose? Yeah, I guess you do have to shout over two guys arguing with each other over whether MJ is the King or the Queen of Pop, but aside from that...

Another contest idea (sort of our way of compensating for the News Quiz?): pick a story from the past week and think of a popular song lyric that fits it.

And no, "The Bay Air Went Over the Mountain" doesn't count!

50. Another great show and another HORRIBLE Dan Abrams tie!
1) John Harwood was tolerable. And I enjoyed the discussion of the Patriot Act and its vile self.

2) KO looked great :loveya::loveya:

3) The snark factor was high.

4) That graduation montage was touching, and I still miss college.

5) I can't believe people thought the evil Mel Martinez looked more competent than Betty Castor. Martinez has the face of the devil.

6) * is still, and will remain, an ass.

7) The bit about the casting of the movie was fun and even included a gratuitous Russell Crowe shot.

KO, for the 1971 you, trudging around the hills of Ithaca: :loveya:

1. Yeah, I was hoping Keith would do Patriot Act at the top tonight. He did not let me down. KILL THE PATRIOT ACT!

2. No argument from me there. Talk about looking "competent"! :loveya:

3. Really, if AccuWeather did a snark count on those ads of theirs, Keith's would be at an all-time high this week.

4. Loved the graduation montage. And what Keith said is so true. Only I felt that way about high school, which I hated. I only began to realize in the last few months how my life's routine would be changing forever and what I'd be leaving behind.

5. LOL...

6. Absolutely.

7. Where would Keith's snark be without gratuitous introduction of either Russell Crowe or Tom Cruise?

One small correction...in 1971, Keith, being a mere lad of 12, was not yet trudging around the hills of Ithaca. That would be 1975-79. But yeah, gotta love the thought of it. It really is a beautiful place, though. Must've been one titch more beautiful then. :loveya:

I'm sooooo procrastinating. I have a deadline tomorrow afternoon and I have a buttload of work to do and I went walking around the neighborhood tonight and now I'm sitting here watching Countdown. Of course, I may have to be up all night anyway so at this point it doesn't really matter much eh?

had bottles of booze in them. 'Cause the hoods are definitely good for that. :D

134. You know, I wasn't drunk, but I don't remember a damn thing
about my commencement. Now, the nice French restaurant that my family and I went to afterwards and had yummy food and a couple of bottles of wine -- THAT, I remember! :9

133. Has Dan Abrams worn this suit three days in a row?
Cause it sure looks like it. Dan! they have clothing stores in LA!

And it doesn't go with that tie, either. Damn! he was progressing so nicely and now he's just floundering around in a fashion morass! Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, you're needed outside the Jackson courtroom, stat!

OK, night ya'll. I'm either going to go crank out the rest of this design, or zonk out, who knows? :hi:
