I went for lunch to this place where all the TVs are set to CNN. As it so happened, they were running his speech--starting out with her introduction. I was hoping they'd cut away after a few minutes, but NOOOOO. And the sound was cranked up high enough that her annoying screech reverberated through the place. You could tell the counter people were miserable.

Then I noticed that when Gramps came up and began to deliver his spiel, you could no longer see her even within the camera frame, but Todd was standing right behind him, for all to see. Cindy? Nowhere in sight, but Todd Palin was right up there.

It was at that point that the voice of Aretha Franklin began to sing in my head: "Chain, chain, chain of fools...Every chain has got a weak link..."

And I thought, I am looking at the weak link. Todd.

He wants to be a star. He wants to be the Spouse Behind the Throne.

Given the chance, he will take over.

Not given the chance, he will have affairs with as many sweet young things who admire him as he can find.

He's too weak to resist.

Of course, when it's found out, it'll just curry more sympathy for her, as the Wronged Woman. Oh well.

But it will be entertaining to watch.

OK, I admit I was with a friend this weekend who was rooting for Notre Dame. I told her she was in friendly territory last weekend. Of course, that's because nobody here is exactly bouncing up and down with joy over the Bucs, and the Indians have sucked all season and the Browns look as if they're going to be even worse, so hating Michigan is all anyone here has left. Unless they're transplanted Pittsburghers who take perverse pride in rubbing our face in the Stillers. And believe it or not, we have plenty of those.
