I remember a lot of people giving him grief for referring to the terrorists at first as "folks." I thought "Well, it's just a bad choice of words and it's the first thing that came out of his Texan mouth."

Mind you, I'm not excusing his presidency overall or anything remotely like that. But I don't hold his hiding out on 9/11 against him, or his poor choice of words on the day. There's too many other GOOD things that are REALLY worth holding against him.

time I was there it was pretty bad. One of the scientists claimed it was brackish water (they're right next to the Potomac) but I think they've got a few interesting chemistry experiments going on. Nothing black; it's not that sort of lab, but I actively avoided the place when I was pregnant.

They're the snobs of the military science labs so I'm not surprised you can't convince them of anything -- they are far worse than many academics I've met when it comes to Not Invented Here. My boss had a bunch of 'em in a come-to-Jesus meeting once with a group from another military lab and the two groups got into a huge pissing contest. They got so out of hand, she took out a whiteboard marker and threatened to put a dots on the noses of anybody who spoke out of turn. I seem to recall that the Navy collected three and the Army got 2 before they wised up. :rofl:

today and heard I left it on in the background. A lot of stories on how not ready we are mass transit wise. Another blivet failure in my eyes. Not sure which channel it was on that talked about regular random dogs and cops at different stops. To do it often etc just not at any one place on a regular schedule to at least make anyone wanting to do anything have to work harder at it.

Also after today and the power outage in NYC I think if I lived or worked in a big city I would keep a motorized scooter at work in case everything was shut down.

...the "power outage in NYC" was actually way, way bigger than NYC (even if NYC was all you ever saw of it on your TVs). Yeah, the visuals of that one reminded me of 9/11 too, with all those people walking home across bridges. But I was in upstate NY at the time and my power was not out for as long as my sisters' in Ohio was. Don't forget, Ohio was to blame for that little catastrophe too. That's where it started. Some bozos trimming trees near Akron somewhere.

As for security failures and preparedness...I came to a conclusion long ago that most security measures are designed primarily to provide the illusion of security, nothing else. They are unevenly and whimsically enforced.

Look at this orange alert...as if it helps anything anyway...at first it was ONLY for trains and subways. Not buses. DUH...A BUS GOT HIT...what, don't buses count unless they are double decker?? Then buses got added. But not planes. No airlines. Hello, McFly...what did terrorists use to conduct what has so far been the most successful attack on American soil? DINGDINGDINGDING!!!! And don't tell me airport security is so stepped up now that we no longer have to worry. Yeah, you can take matches on a plane like the shoe bomber did, but your granny can't take her embroidery scissors...that's security.

I know it wasn't only NYC (luckily I was in FL at the time though it did not hit here I am told) but it was watching people try to get out of NY that made me think of the motorized scooter. Then again today in London listening to them talk about walking miles and miles. There is a kid rides one all over the place here, and it folds small. Perfect for the office so a person can get home to take care of their family, be it human or furbabies.

On the rest, only so much can be done though it is not getting done yet and the money given toward protection has been wasted.We can do better. But at the same time, the chances of being killed by a car, lightening etc. are so much higher than from a terrorist attack. Not to minimize an attack but perspective is a good thing to keep in mind. My heart goes out to those in Great Briton.

I still believe we are all ultimately responsible for how we respond to the circumstances of our lives...as unhappy as we may find them to be. No matter how bad off we feel we are or who is to blame, no one forces us to use these kinds of tactics, either to attempt to get our way or to express our rage. If people choose to do that, they are the ones responsible...and the politicians are responsible only for not attempting to stop it. Yes, they could do a better job of trying to make a better world for everyone and not just the rich, privileged people living in certain parts of it...but they are still not the ones to blame first when certain well-funded parties commit acts of terrorism allegedly in the name of the un-rich and un-privileged. There is no "if" about that.

looking at why someone might do something is different from justifying it. Weird just had a justification conversation with the hub on the phone about the Fristians, Blivets et all. "They" do not justify anything, they feel they have the right, obligation, reason to do what they believe is the right thing, whether it is invading a country because (pick you choice of the 100 plus reasons given for Iraq) it is right/needed/get even or commit a terrorist attack because it is right/needed/get even. There is no justification, period. To try to look below the surface and find out the reasoning behind an act is a first step toward learning how to defuse a situation. Causing more pain and suffering world wide is not going to defuse anything. Someone has to be the first to say stop, lets go about this a different way. It used to be US.

I just read the thread and saw the diversity of opinions over the suit! :rofl: On my TV the shirt is almost a cornflower blue, but a bit deeper. A bit bluer than a shale blue. I might call it periwinkle..... Very flattering at least in my world! :P

ages ago and failed it. They had no letters on the keys either. :rofl: I have a split keyboard (will never go back to a regular one) that forces me to use both hands and I don't look quite as much as I use too. And swear I don't see what I hit half the time anyway. It is also a great way to avoid jobs that involve typing/writing or one of the bosses at work would have me tied to a desk typing and keeping track of her and her stuff. I would much rather help people with PhotoShop and even QuarkXpress than be chain in her office.

Good to know you are feeling a bit better. It is hard to hear specially when you have loved ones when the bad news happens. I went off and made a special smiley for when people need big hugs because of you. (And thanks for that as it was a great escape for a bit.)
