That's why I unplug mine when I log off and shut down. I did the same thing with my desktops too, so I know the frustration firsthand. I went through 5 desktops before I started using laptops. Thankfully they were not too expensive at the time.

When that Conficker situation was all over the news last month, I took my lappy to Staples to make sure it was okay. They checked it out for free (normally it would cost me 30.00) and I got it back in 2 days with a clean bill of health. Any service with a computer is such a pain in the ass it's better to buy a new one and hope for the best.

and I've wiped the hard drive clean several times because of slow perfomance and viruses, so I pretty much have the drill down by now. I think it's the loss of the freedom to spend hours surfing that stinks the most. :)

but what you can do is use flash drives to save pictures, documents and all so your hard drive won't require a lot of maintenance. Thankfully mine has a backup system in place and it scanned before I came here. I know the surfing all too well. When you're not able to surf for a while it'll drive a person nuts! I've been there too so it's not common.
