42. I don't know if I'll ever understand exactly what she was thinking

but listening to her with Keith, and seeing that their relationship obviously hasn't been damaged by all this (quite possibly because she cared enough about him to contact him when it happened, although we didn't know it then) gives me hope that she didn't sell herself completely down the river for ambition's sake--for herself or for John. What I want to think now is that she believed so completely in what her husband thought was important for this country--and maybe was willingly blind enough for a while to the full extent of her husband's unfaithfulness--that she told herself that it was a one-time thing, it didn't matter, others had done worse, she had learned to accept it, and what he wanted to do as president was way more important than her personal pain over his straying one little time. Then she found out it wasn't like she thought it was, and things really went to hell.

I hope that's how it was.

Now, she has to tell herself (and she's not really wrong about this) that as bad an idea as it ultimately was to hang in as long as he did, its ultimate effect was to get the issues nearest and dearest to her and John on the table and keep the serious candidates honest about them. I still think it would have been better for her to push him to withdraw early, using her illness as an excuse, but then again, I can see how she might not have wanted to do that, lest everyone look at her as if they expected her to drop dead in front of them.

Oh, and Keith? Thank you for two things: 1) showing to me that there is way, way more to this book than just the infidelity thing and 2) waiting to ask her how she was until the end of the interview. And doing it in a respectful way, not that delicate walking-on-eggshells thing that makes a person feel as if you expect her to drop dead in front of you.

I also loved seeing Keith finally bash Tucker Carlson now that he's on Fixed News. He really did not lay a glove on him all the time he was at MSNBC, but once he moved to the dark side he became fair game, and rightly so.
