KOEB Meeting: 05/06/10 -- A Well-Hung Parliament Edition
:hi:, kids! It's looking like a lot of people were turned away from the polls in the UK. Are they in for re-votes and legal challenges? Doesn't that sound sadly familiar?

1. Great thread title, Pats!
:hi:

I guess we're not the only ones who know how to screw up elections.

2. I guess not.
I wonder if the Lib Dems would form a coalition with Labour and act as a strong lefter-leaning block than they were as just Labour. But we'll see. :hi:

I don't know much about British Parliment and their politics.

How about that Boehner? He's finally on the right side of an argument.

11. Lots
but the main ones are Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Conservatives or Tories. It looks like the Conservatives will win the most seats, but not a majority of seats. Since Parliament will be hung, I think if the Lib Dems and Labour join, Gordon Brown stays on, at least until they make some vote of confidence later. It's all about the number of seats per party, not the individual candidate for PM, that determines who becomes PM.

The Boner can't be insane all the time. He has to at least get elected.

I'm almost sorry the name is taken; we really need such an appellation here in the States. The truly scary thing is that the the biggest jokes in this country take themselves completely seriously.

62. That's excellent.
I saw Alan 'Howling Laud' Hope last night standing next to Cameron when they read the results in Witney, but I completely missed the name of his party. There was also a Witney candidate dressed as Jesus(?) with sunglasses on and a sign around his neck, but I didn't get a chance to read what it said.

5. And this just in: hypocrisy is alive & well on DU
In an abrupt & surprising turn-about, it is no longer acceptable on DU to tell someone to report child abuse if the person claiming she *knows* child abuse is happening claims she's so paralyzed about the abuse that happened to herself that she just "can't" do it.

I know you're all shocked by this.

That is just plain stupid. Sheesh. Sometimes we all have to put ourselves aside and do what we know is right.

Speaking of right, did you ever think we'd be agreeing with the Boner (and even Glenn Beck, who has said on TV that terrorist suspects have Constitutional rights when they're US citizens)? Is this Opposites Week?

12. it's like when I find I'm agreeing with Buchanan
gives me a queasy feeling in my stomach.

Back to the other post, o.m.g., the poster was all over the map, blaming everyone because the statute of limitations bars abuse claims after 12 years after turning 18 in Ohio. While I'm sure it takes quite a while to get over abuse, if you haven't gotten your act together by the age of 30, you've got other problems.

by insisting she report the abuse. Oh no, I'm blaming a victim, I'm happy she was abused, I'm going all "hard ass." Bull shit. Lift up a finger & fucking help yourself. Help is out there, but you have to :gasp: ask for it. Oh no, that's way too hard for her, & I should "understand" & be "more compassionate."

34. Oh you should have seen the squirming
when I kept pointing out that anyone who suspects child abuse has to report it....oh she can't because she only heard about it, doesn't know names (even though she was supposedly told by relatives), then the abuse happened years ago (child is still minor, though), when her first report of it was that she *knew* it happened.

Fuck that shit. if you were abused by someone but nothing happened (for whatever reason) to your abuser, & then you somehow learn he is abusing another child, what the hell kind of person are you to just do *nothing* about it & claim it's because you're too paralyzed from your own abuse & besides, no one ever does anything about child abuse anyway? :wtf:

He's from northeast Ohio--Canton, originally. His book is not the chucklefest I originally thought it was; actually, it's quite dark, in the sense that it's obvious from the first few chapters that he became a pro ballplayer largely to escape his insufferable home life.

Edited on Thu May-06-10 07:41 PM by Berry Cool
I have always resented BP for buying out Standard Oil of Ohio years ago and removing the beloved red-white-and-blue Sohio gas stations of my childhood from the landscape of my home state. This is just an even bigger reason to hate them. And if they turn out someday to be implicated somehow in the bombing of Pan Am 103, well, that's the trifecta.

My high school yearbook, in a summary of news events of that year, says that the price of gasoline "skyrocketed" during the gas crisis to the point where a gallon could cost 80 cents.
