Greetings, fellow KOEBers!
I wrote this as my Special Comment, and since I've been so busy the last few weeks I finally got around to finish writing this. Enjoy!
The end of an era…or is it?
On Friday, January 21, 2011, as I was wrapping up my work week, I was anxiously awaiting some level of sanity. Working for the Federal government is not all roses and sunshine because politics, corruption, and mismanagement as well as racism, sexism, and other maladies abound in the worst possible way in many instances, and always at the taxpayer’s expense. Monday through Thursday is as maddening, chaotic, stressful, and downright impossible when dealing with irate callers who just want a simple answer to a simple question. On top of that, there are policy decisions to be made, mailings to be done, phone calls to answer, research to conduct, meetings to commence, friends to make and enemies to avoid. There have been many instances that I just did not want to go in and deal with the pressure. Friday is just recovery from all the drama in the four previous days. That’s why the phrase, “Its 5:00 Somewhere”, resonates with me!
If there is a case for finding solace in an otherwise out of control world, for the last 8 years, from 8-9 PM Eastern Time, 5 days a week, by tuning in to Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, I had my Utopia, I had my peaceful respite, I had my moment of sanity. I had a reason to love humanity again!!! Afterwards, I can prepare for the next day and start anew. Depending on the stories and breaking news, I find myself getting an education that no college or university can offer, even for free. I have a Bachelor’s degree, but not in Political Science or Journalism, but for the last 8 years I was being taught things in these fields on Countdown that it would take on average a minimum of 5 years to get through lectures and exams. That was even more important to me with the events of the world taking place during what I call the Stone Age (the Bush Administration), and every night I got my fill of the antics of many of the worst persons in the world as this nation was torn asunder by the ravages of war and an economic system that went bust. Sadly, to this very day, President Obama is still cleaning up the ginormous shit left behind, and even with the budget cuts cutting very deep into the soul of this nation, this has to be done whether we like it or not.
Therefore, on that night, when the era ended with these words, “this is the last edition of Countdown”, by Utopia was shattered, my refuge vanished, my peaceful respite was shattered, and my moment of sanity was snatched away, and what I called the best time on television in this century was over!!!!! My first reaction was universal along with everyone else—What the Fuck?!?! How??? Why?????? What in the name of all things bright and beautiful happened??????? Looking into the eyes of Keith Olbermann said it all—he was fed up, frustrated, saddened, and disillusioned. He wanted to go out on top and he did, but in my opinion this was way too soon to do it. I figured he was going to tough it out for another 2 years but that wasn’t the case. He never, ever wears his emotions on his sleeve, but this night he made it known that it was time for him to turn the page in his life and he walked away from a media empire that turned on him in an outrageous, stupid, and ridiculous way. He needs his moment of sanity and this was the only way to do it, by walking off into the sunset, leaving us to wonder one thing: what happens now? Do we go back to our busy, hectic, and crazy lives? Do I have to occupy my free time with something else now, like doing my homework, paying my bills, cooking dinner, washing my clothes, tending to my cat, talking to my family and friends, going shopping, and all that good stuff? At least my diverse and fast paced lifestyle will have to be the forefront now that this is over. Oh, well. Back to life, back to reality.
But wait!! Don’t be in despair! There’s an update! There’s life after Countdown after all! In between all the tweets, Facebook pages, petitions, cable subscriptions being cancelled, messages of support from celebrities, politicians, media personalities, and ordinary Americans in full support of Keith and thanking him for his service and his realistic commentary, hope came in like a mighty rushing wind. When word came on February 8, 2011 that Current TV came out of nowhere and on the scene to rescue us from our sadness and grief by inviting Keith into their world, with no corporate overseers, no battles with management, and most of all, abiding by the First Amendment we all hold so dear, the Utopia that was taken away from me is slowing coming back to life; so in a few weeks, we can be rest assured that all will be right with the world once again, and a new era begins for us!!! Once again, the special comments will surface, the daily events of the world will be put under the microscope; those who we elect into office will be taken to task and called on the carpet with such brute force no one is spared; and most of all, the big chair in a better location will be occupied by the most revered and totally truthful man in all of broadcasting, our friend, our rock, our real Superman, Keith Olbermann, is coming back!!!!!!!!
So, in the meantime, I submit this unto all of you. Be patient, pay it forward in all you do, be loving and kind to all who are in and who will come into your life, and load up on the buffalo wings, popcorn and the Merlot because the biggest party in the world will commence this spring!!!!!!!!! One door has closed, but another has opened in a mighty big, big way!!! So, fear not because the new era has begun!!!!!!!! Back to my Utopia!!!!!!!
MSNBC, we hardly knew ye. Have fun in your greed and your wickedness.
Mr. Gore, Thank You, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Night and Good Luck!
