FEMA chief waited until after storm hit

WASHINGTON - The government's disaster chief waited until hours after Hurricane Katrina had already struck the Gulf Coast before asking his boss to dispatch 1,000 Homeland Security employees to the region - and gave them two days to arrive, according to internal documents.

Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sought the approval from Homeland Security Secretary Mike Chertoff roughly five hours after Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29. Brown said that among duties of these employees was to "convey a positive image" about the government's response for victims.

Before then, FEMA had positioned smaller rescue and communications teams across the Gulf Coast. But officials acknowledged Tuesday the first department-wide appeal for help came only as the storm raged.

Brown's memo to Chertoff described Katrina as "this near catastrophic event" but otherwise lacked any urgent language. The memo politely ended, "Thank you for your consideration in helping us to meet our responsibilities."

I'm just glad I'm finally starting to calm down. I've been walking around in a state of seething rage since the total failure and utter callousnenss of FEMA and this administration became apparent.

Which, although entirely justified, does make it hard to get stuff done. At present, I'm gelling into a nice, coldly calculating hate.

This just refueled it, but I've lived with the seething on and off since the first stolen election. It ebbs and flows. Sometimes it's a hatred I can live with, sometimes, I just spew.

Spent the weekend with my family and we all screamed at the TV and cried at the horror and stupidity.

I can really understand it. all of those other things that KO named off, for example ww2, 9/11, were marked by an amazing resurgence, people taking care of each other, every one pulling together.

after THIS, it was immediately and horribly apparent that our government is woefully and inadequately unprepared for this.

this is not my country anymore.

I can completely understand the desire to off yourself.

Kerik's just not getting it is he? Doesn't understand why they walked off the job -- they did it because THAT was the heart of darkness right there. Much, much, much darker than 9/11. After that ... everything, the world, reality -- it all becomes completely meaningless.

they set up that church as a safe haven less than a block from ground zero during 9/11. there was no safe haven there in nola. no safe haven anywhere, only darkness and fear and chaos all around, and nobody coming to rescue them.
