Keith Olbermann '79 is currently the host of Countdown With Keith Olbermann, which airs on weekdays at 8:00 p.m. on MSNBC. Olbermann was a communications arts major (as it was called at the time) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and worked at WVBR (and at The Sun for one day). He recently sat down with The Sun to discuss his Cornell career, his professional career, and his recent coverage of the 2004 election voting irregularities.

1. Thanks!
A Communication Arts major in the College of Agriclture and Life Sciences? What a weird place to put a journalism major -- if that's what this equates to. Gee - he's an Aggie! As a Texan, that word has special connotations for me...

2. he is *so* not an Aggie
comes across as a Rice boy to me, give the combination of brains and snark (if we're cataloging according to Texas schools).

3. Ooooh! Someone who can understand the Aggie comment!
Yeah, for a Texas school, Rice is the closest I can think of too.

But it's funny to a Texan to think of Keith Olbemann in the context of beng an Aggie, talk about a jarring misfit! Imagine him out in the south 40 turning little bulls into steers.... and then, maybe not!

4. well, I certainly can't imagine him on the south 40
turning little bulls into heifers... which allegedly is another Aggie pastime... :o (hey, I'm already in the corner; can't get much worse.)

5. Yeah, I can tell you haven't been on the South 40 for a while...
...turning a little bull into a HEIFER would require a sex-change operation! Whereas a STEER, well, let's just say they wouldn't have much interest in the pictures in a bovine version of a Playboy ...Playheifer?

Yeah, I can just see our Keef wearing those big heavy boots, dusty cowboy jeans), a five-o'clock shadow, sharp eyes and wooly-bear caterpillar-eyebrows shaded by a working cowboy's hat....hmm, this part isn't so bad, come to think of it. But doing the deed on those poor little bulls? Nope, no way no how. And I shudder to imagine if he attempted a Texas accent, which is required in this setting.

6. I can tell you haven't heard some of the stories about Aggies
or you have a cleaner mind than I do. The activity I had in mind doesn't require an operation... well at least not beforehand. Restorative surgery on cow or cow-poker after the fact might be required.

7. actually, they have some sort of more "humane" castration
thingy these days -- some sort of rubber banding that allegedly kills the blood flow and then I think the testicles drop off of their own accord after a few days?? I'm betting the calves are still not happy about the process and I've heard it's nasty if you get your fingers caught in the bands. I guess that means "calf fries" are no longer a delicacy. Gosh, that's some sad news.

8. Yechhhh - oversharing alert!
Actually, I did hear about that. I'm thinking it wasn't to be more humane, it was to be quicker, cheaper, and with less chance of infection - which translates to money.

And how we got to this point from discussing Keith Olbermann is something I don't want to think about!
