U.S. forces, joined by Iraqi troops, on Thursday launched the largest air assault since the U.S.-led invasion, targeting insurgent strongholds north of the capital, the military said. The U.S. military said the offensive, dubbed Operation Swarmer, was aimed at clearing "a suspected insurgent operating area" northeast of Samarra and was expected to continue over several days.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has acknowledged a specific death threat against her and her retired colleague Sandra Day O'Connor, blaming lawmakers for fueling "the irrational fringe." Ginsburg revealed in a speech in South Africa last month that she and O'Connor were threatened a year ago by someone who called on the Internet for the immediate "patriotic" killing of the justices.

The move includes $3.6m in proposed fines for more than 100 CBS stations for airing a program depicting a teen orgy. The largest fine imposed on Wednesday was $3.6m against 111 CBS stations for airing a 2004 episode of "Without A Trace" about an investigation into a possible rape. The program showed teenagers engaged in sexual activities.

Finally,
LODI, Calif. -- When a dump truck backed into Curtis Gokey's car, he decided to sue the city for damages. Only thing is, he was the one driving the dump truck. But that minor detail didn't stop Gokey, a Lodi city employee, from filing a $3,600 claim for the December accident, even after admitting the crash was his fault. After the city denied that claim because Gokey was, in essence, suing himself, he and his wife, Rhonda, decided to file a new claim under her name. City Attorney Steve Schwabauer said this one also lacks merit because Rhonda Gokey can't sue her own husband. "You can sue your spouse for divorce, but you can't sue your spouse for negligence," Schwabauer said. "They're a married couple under California law. They're one entity. It's damage to community property." But Rhonda Gokey insisted she has "the right to sue the city because a city's vehicle damaged my private vehicle." In fact, her claim, currently pending at Lodi City Hall, is for an even larger amount - $4,800. "I'm not as nice as my husband is," she said.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11857720/There's nothing quite like the shrill trill of a cell phone to kill the excitement of a cinematic moment. It's an infuriating problem, one that movie theater owners have tried to address subtly with lobby signs and on-screen reminders to silence phones. Now, they are considering a new tactic: jamming cell phone signals inside the theater so calls cannot get through.

Simpson was invited to a major Republican fundraiser in Los Angeles on Thursday to be attended by Mr. Bush and top GOP congressional leaders. The reason for the decline was Simpson's concern about politicizing her favorite charity. The final decision came after a day of back and forth reports from her camp and event organizers. Reuters, which first reported the story, quoted people close to Simpson as saying she refused to appear at the fundraiser sponsored by the of National Republican Congressional Committee even after she was offered a private meeting with Mr. Bush. Simpson's charity is "Operation Smile," which provides plastic surgery for poor overseas children with serious facial deformities.
