43. People had other things on their mind
Also, at the beginning of his first term the world was still happy from Clinton. Once 9/11 happened, everyone rallied around. That lasted until they started scaring everyone with "terra alerts" every ten minutes and we had to go buy duct tape and visqueen.

Then came the lead up to the election and the lies and the cheating, and now, here we are, and everyone's started to look around.

They've also been really busy working two jobs to pay their debts.

Crazy world.

On a happier note:

Hi, doll! Happy St. Patrick's Day! :toast: Nice to see you here.

to many years ago, when a friend of mine was trying to explain the difference between "dick" and "prick" to a foreign student. The connotations were eluding her until my friend said, "Look, X is a dick. Y is a prick". Comprehension was immediate. Unfortunately, "Mr. X" overhead the exchange.

19. Some guy called Ed today with an interesting theory about impeachment
He posited that if the Dems gain control, the Repubs would impeach in December and acquit * so that the Dems can't impeach him and convict. Once he'd been impeached, they couldn't do it again because it would be double jeopardy. I thought it was an interesting theory.

172. interesting thought, but I can't see * going for it
the level of denial there is incredible. I think the WH is truly isolated and doesn't comprehend how much of the country is unhappy with the current state of affairs. I don't know how they explain the polls to themselves.

Yes, the R Congress could do it without *'s consent but even that won't get them re-elected in 2008. In fact, some of the hardcore R voters might feel the President had been betrayed by his own party, no matter what they're told.

173. I was glad that Keith put her remarks in their proper context
i.e., that they were part of an otherwise dry speech given a few weeks ago (as opposed to "I held a press conference today to level this accusation"). Interesting that Roberts is not accorded the deference to speak for the Court that has been given to some other past Chief Justices.

75. One of the reasons I stopped going to church
all the anti-woman crap that was being spewed from the pulpit. Oh sure, they paint it all purty & sell some on the idea that the husband should be the leader of the family & the wife submit in all things (!!!!) to him, which then extends to banning women from leading prayers during services because leadership roles belong only to men....let's just say I ran from that place. I also ended at 20+ year friendship with a friend from college who started spewing this crap because she now believes it!!

Yes, they drum it up in the churches, then constantly blame the courts for all the liberal (read: bad) problems in our society, blame the two (& now one) female justice on the Supreme Court for most of this, and then act shocked (shocked!) that all this hatred they've carefully nurtured spills out into actual violence & threats against judges.

78. it's amazing isn't it?
the amount of anti-women stuff that comes from the most innocent seeming sources. Like I was just told the other day that "Hello Kitty" doesn't have a mouth. Ok, lets just give little kids it's a good idea to make women shut up. It's subtle, but it's out there. It jolted me at first, now, I just shake my head. It's just so prevalent.

175. it was marvelous. I've been hoping he'd guest Turley to ask about
these issues and was going to drop him an email yesterday to request it but I got busy at work and put it off. Since the NSA stuff is coming up again right after the Senate recess, it would be good to have some accurate information floating around out there. Me, I'm wondering if the President's oath of office is binding or merely ceremonial, 'cause it sure seems like he's broken it six ways from Sunday. What can we do about that, in theory and in practice?

Good for him for covering Ruth Bader Ginsburg's remarks and discussing the feeling that the media didn't cover Sandra Day O'Connor's remarks at all.

About the government lawyer in the Moussaui case sending information to lawyers defending the airlines against a suit brought by the 911 families claiming their negligence in screening passengers for weapons contributed to the deaths of their family members. Apparently this was the information that came to the attention of the judge who threw the Moussaui case out for tampering. I think I have this right, anybody else hear this story?

There was a chance they would throw out the possibility of the death penalty, but they reached a compromise. Now they can bring witnesses who haven't been tampered with. The story has been around all week, but I heard about the compromise on the way home today on Ed's show.

He snarks at the staff all the time, and I enjoy seeing all the people responsible for the show get some face time for their efforts. It's always in good humor and, like that scene where everyone was signing the petition, sometimes it's even poking fun at him.

Those kind of remarks seem actionable to me. Equating gay people with hate groups, and speaking out about it in an official capacity.
Class acts, the Irish gay organization said they wouldn't dignify it with a response.

164. About that Gospel of Peace and Saint Patrick...
Okay, gang, I'm just getting caught up here because I was out at a Democratic event last night and didn't watch Keith until this morning. But I can't let that George W. Bush sound bite about Saint Patrick spreading the peace pass without this little tidbit, courtesy of the Guardian newspaper.

Yes, yes, I know; we all think that George W. Bush talking about peace is like Hugh Hefner talking about avoiding impure thoughts. But there's more to the story. Apparently Bush's forebears were in the business of sowing discord and violence, too. Read on...

Quote from the link above:

Scion of traitors and warlords: why Bush is coy about his Irish links

Tapestry artist reveals ancestors of US president as murderous bunch

Angelique Chrisafis, Ireland correspondent
Thursday January 27, 2005
The Guardian

It is perhaps not the best omen for US foreign affairs. Local historians in Wexford have discovered that George Bush is a descendant of Strongbow, the power-hungry warlord who led the Norman invasion of Ireland thus heralding 800 years of mutual misery. With a long line of Scots Irish presidents including Woodrow Wilson, the Irish are normally quick to claim US leaders as their own. But, despite President Bush's large Ulster Scots vote in the American Bible belt, Ireland had let his family escape the genealogical microscope.

(SNIP)

Indeed, when Mr Bush visited a County Clare castle last year, radio talk-show hosts asked: "Is this the most hated American ever to set foot on Irish soil?"

The US president's now apparent ancestor, Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke - known as Strongbow for his arrow skills - is remembered as a desperate, land-grabbing warlord whose calamitous foreign adventure led to the suffering of generations. Shunned by Henry II, he offered his services as a mercenary in the 12th-century invasion of Wexford in exchange for power and land. When he eventually died of a festering ulcer in his foot, his enemies said it was the revenge of Irish saints whose shrines he had violated.

The Bush clan - who pride themselves on a distinguished New England family history that can be traced back to the first English in America - may well be looking for a healthy spin on the news. But it seems that Strongbow is not the worst of Bush's newfound ancestors.

The genetic line can also be traced to Dermot MacMurrough, the Gaelic king of Leinster reviled in history books as the man who sold Ireland for personal gain.

(See rest of article)

Hm. Selling a land and a people for personal gain. Who have thunk it?

168. You should post this in GD so people can recommend it.
"The US president's now apparent ancestor, Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke - known as Strongbow for his arrow skills - is remembered as a desperate, land-grabbing warlord whose calamitous foreign adventure led to the suffering of generations."

I can hear it at the impeachment trial: "I was posessed by my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaddy."
