Countdown Newsletter -- 04/13/06: Refining the Leak
I won't be around for the first show, but maybe for the rerun. It looks like a good one -- and Monica's on too...

Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

In grand jury testimony two years ago, former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby did not assert that President Bush or Vice President Cheney instructed him to disclose the name of CIA officer Valerie Plame to reporters as part of an effort to rebut criticism of the Iraq war, Libby's lawyers said in a court filing late yesterday. The statement that Libby did not link Bush and Cheney to the disclosure of Plame's name during his 2004 grand jury testimony is meant to bolster Libby's contention that no conspiracy existed to make selective disclosures to undermine a key administration critic, as some in Washington have charged. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/13/AR2006041300111.html

But... are Fleischer and Rove going to be the focus of Libby's defense?

Libby's lawyers focused on three potential witnesses: State Department official Marc Grossman; former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer; and White House senior adviser Karl Rove. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/politics/3791917.html

A recent surge in public criticism of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld by retired military leaders is the culmination of months of intense but largely private debate among active duty officers about how best to voice dissent over Bush administration policies, according to officers involved in the discussions. A number of officers have been critical of Iraq policy - mostly anonymously - since the administration's early days. But the calls for Rumsfeld's resignation are an unusual step for members of the military, who are acutely sensitive to the appearance of challenging civilian leadership of the armed forces. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-general13apr13,0,3539237.story?coll=la-story-footer

The lawyer representing the captain of the Duke University lacrosse team thinks there could be indictments in woman's allegations she was raped. Butch Williams thinks the prosecutor will take the case to a grand jury Monday. The woman, a college student working as a stripper, says she was gang-raped last month at a team party. An investigation is continuing even though lawyers for the players say they've been exonerated by DNA tests. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12289760/

Florida's newest problem is roughly the circumference of a telephone pole. It has no toes. It snacks on rabbits. It's the Burmese python. And in South Florida, the problem is growing in number and in feet.
"Last year, we caught 95 pythons," said Skip Snow, a biologist with Florida Everglades National Park.

Monica Novotny reports: a photographer who specializes in shooting celebrity look-alikes in real-life situations.

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
David Blaine intends to sleep with the fishes - but only for a week, and in full public view. The 33-year-old magician will perform his latest stunt by living underwater for seven days and nights in a "human aquarium" in front of New York's Lincoln Center. He will conclude by attempting to hold his breath underwater longer than the record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/P/PEOPLE_DAVID_BLAINE?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
