I actually had a chance to read it at work today...not in the morning when it first came out but later on in the day when I could catch my breath (extremely rare).

I think Keith's got plenty to chew on...we don't need to worry about him being too disappointed now that but one piece (as he sees it) of the puzzle has been solved!

3. Excellent blog, just excellent. I wish he could write a column in one of

the widely read venues. What he wrote is of higher quality in every way than almost everything we see in the NYT, WaPo, and LAT, among others.

He sure has come a long way from that sportscaster.

I still think his sale of the MJ puppets on ebay was a statement of his being fed up with reporting on something so meaningless when there are great and vitally important events and issues going unreported due to neglect or deliberate suppression.

4. well, I didn't "know" him in his sportscaster days, so I can't say

how far he's come, but I sure like where he is now. :-) As for the puppet auction, it was a nice little PR stunt and an opportunity to wring some benefit out of covering the MJ trial. I would have been just as well pleased to see him give the MJ trial a complete miss, but even if he had, the air time probably wouldn't have been devoted to a "serious" story. In the current format, there's only so much time they can spend on the hard news. To give him credit, he does spend that time on the tough stories and is willing to ask the awkward questions, which is more than one can say for most of what passes as news these days. If he ever gets tired of the daily grind of cranking out a one-hour broadcast five days a week, Keith might do well at re-inventing the news magazine show -- a once-a-week broadcast that really goes after something in depth instead of just giving us the highlights. I don't know if that sort of thing would be to his taste but it's certainly within his reach.

5. I didn't "know" him in his sportscaster days either. What I mean is that

while he still loves baseball, he has really made the transition to serious national and world news in a mature, convincing, powerful way. That blog entry on how Felt had to have a support system during his Deep Throat days is very well written, eloquent even, and better than most of what I have seen from the people who write newspaper columns for a living.

He is very, very good. I'd love to see what he'd do if he were given more freedom with the subjects and mode of his coverage.

He really is cute when he gets all excited about his pet investigation of Watergate. I totally agree with his conclusions. There must have been Jr.Throats.

BTW, I meet my first KOEB buddy in person tomorrow. Sharon is going to meet me in the city, she is in from out of town. Can't wait to make contact with another Vixen from the Countdown clubhouse.

and just to chime in: I think that Keith never was the "dumb jock sportscaster" that his detractors want to stereotype him as. He always had the brilliant mind, and he developed the writing ability long ago. He got into sports to begin with because he loved sports, but it wasn't all he loved, and eventually being stereotyped as a sportscaster must just not have been enough for him. He wanted more, and he reached for it, and he got it--because the ability had been there waiting to be used for a long time. It just needed an outlet.

Trouble is, now he has to put up with idiots who yell "Go back to SportsCenter, you dumb jock-writer hack" every time he nails them to the wall for the stupid stuff they do. It's an easy insult to make, but by no means is it applicable. Keith isn't an ex-dumb jock sportscaster who moved into news with delusions of grandeur and now is delusional enough to think he's actually good at it. Nor is he an ex-dumb jock sportscaster who moved into news and whose limited skills eventually developed and grew to fit the job. The skills were there for a *long* time. They just weren't being fully exercised until he moved into news.

Also, it's clear that he is interested in so much more than sports. People who may be inclined to yell "Go back to Sportscenter, perhaps resent that there is one newscaster out there who is attempting to cut through all the bullshit and actually report some news with a healthy dose of snark and truth mixed in for good measure.

My post was just an attempt to answer gk's statement "Well, I didn't 'know' him in his sportscaster days, so I can't say how far he's come, but I sure like where he is now." It was just my way of saying, when it came to his basic skills, he didn't have far to go at all to make the transition from sportswriter to newswriter. And I agree with you entirely, bunny, that the "Go back to SportsCenter" bunch, who most enjoy trying to tag him with the stereotyped identity of "ex-dumb jock sportscaster who is out of his element," are the ones who feel most insecure because he is indeed hitting the nail on the head when it comes to news. They don't like the fact that his ability to cut through the bullshit is making them look bad, so the best they can come up with is insults to his sportscasting past (implying he's too stupid to cover news) or calling him unimaginative nicknames like "Olberwoman" (which he probably first heard from some bully in kindergarten). They think if they just accuse him of being stupid and monodimensional, they can dismiss him. But, of course, he's not...and they can't.

on edit: and he's also based in reality. I used to have a friend that worked in a university library. There was a small fire in the library basement. No damage was done, except to some foreign newspapers. Mind you, these are newspapers that the library will have available on other media within six months of the papers being printed, but a history prof still bitched out the librarian about the loss of some obscure Austrian newspaper and wanted to be informed in advance the next time they had a fire. Oh yeah, buddy, we plan those. :eyes:
