TORAHnyc, Jewish Reform Outreach organization holds City's only free Reform Kol Nidre service.
New York City, NY (PRWEB) September 5, 2007 -- Join TORAHnyc's Rabbi Ari Fridkis and Cantorial student Karen Strauss on Yom Kippur Eve:
Friday September 21
7:30pm
Park Avenue and 60th St. (Christ Church)
Yom Kippur Eve (Kol Nidre) is considered to be one of the holiest and most solemn days of the year. Its central theme is atonement and repentance for sins against both God and one's fellow man.
Yom Kippur's observance is held even among the majority of secular Jews who may not strictly observe other holidays. Many secular Jews will fast and attend synagogue on Yom Kippur, where the number of worshippers attending is often double or triple the normal attendance.
There are very few synagogues that do not charge for worship on the High Holy Days. Tickets are distributed to members but the outside public is charged a fee.
Torahnyc reaches out to the unaffiliated Reform-Liberal Jewish Community of Greater New York with holiday services, Shabbat dinners, and educational programs.
The organization welcomes parents and their children, singles, Interfaith couples, Gays and Lesbians and all who want to come and pray.
Torahnyc provides a forum for the free exchange of cultural, educational and religious information. The mission is to work in concert with other reformed synagogues to create a deeper sense of community, to organize and conduct classes to teach the Torah, Talmud and the Bible, and to help disenfranchised Jews who are looking for a vehicle to help them achieve a higher level of spirituality.
Along with Shabbat dinners, TORAHnyc held a Passover Seder at East End Synagogue where the members and the outside community were invited to attend at no charge. Other events in future are the Rosh Hashanah dinner, Shabbat Dinners, forthcoming Bible Study classes and a Hanukah event.
Rabbi Ari Fridkis ,LCSW,a congregational rabbi for many years,is the Founder and Director of TorahNYC: a new organization devoted to shedding the light of Torah onto all who are in search of a deeper connection to Judaism.
"Our goal is to invite all unaffiliated Jewish and interfaith individuals and families to our Shabbat dinners, Holiday celebrations and Jewish studies programs." Rabbi Fridkis has been a Reform rabbi for twenty-one years and a psychotherapist for eighteen. Ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary, he received his clinical MSW from Yeshiva University.
